"We aren't going to the manor. We're heading straight to our own house," Judith said, her brow furrowed.
"I apologize, ma'am, but these are Mr. Quincy's orders. I have to follow them."
Judith was temporarily speechless.
Ever since Jillian married Killian, Caleb had been the absolute only person in Killian's inner circle to treat both her and her daughter with consistent respect and politeness. She simply couldn't bring herself to make things difficult for him.
Jillian softly reassured her mother. "Judith, Killian and I already agreed on this. I'm going back to the manor today."
"Why on earth are you going back? You've already made up your mind to divorce him. You need to make a clean break, not keep tangling yourself up with him," Judith advised earnestly.
Jillian offered a gentle smile. "He finally wants to sit down and talk things out face-to-face. If we can end this amicably, it's far better than turning everything into a vicious, humiliating battle. It saves Connor from being caught in the crossfire."
Thinking of Connor, Judith ultimately released a heavy sigh and dropped the subject.
As the two women finished packing, Jillian's phone suddenly rang. It was a call from the manager of Nova Logic, the company she had been aiming to acquire.
Between the surgery and her recovery, she hadn't had any time to deal with work. The manager was reaching out directly to say that they had concluded their internal discussions and were prepared to hand over full managerial control to her. Some of the team planned to stay on, while others were choosing to resign, and they wanted an in-person meeting to hammer out the details.
"That works. Let's set up a time to discuss everything in depth," Jillian said evenly. "Tell the staff that those who want to leave will be fairly compensated, and those who choose to stay must adhere to my management."
Immersed in her call, she heard movement behind her. Assuming it was Caleb, she spoke without turning around. "I can handle the luggage myself. It's just personal items, you don't need to carry them."
No one answered from behind her.
Instead, a large, well-defined hand simply reached past her and hoisted the bag off the bed.
Startled, Jillian spun around, only to see Killian standing there.
He had always been wildly arrogant and completely unapproachable, never once lowering himself to perform menial tasks like this.
Seeing him personally carrying her bags now felt entirely foreign to her.
"Thank you," she murmured softly.
