The atmosphere was tense, laced with a faint edge of intimacy.
"I have something to say to you," Jillian spoke up first.
"Go ahead," Killian replied, releasing her wrist.
Jillian set the glass on the coffee table, smoothed out her nightgown, and sat down with calm composure.
She had mostly recovered her strength. Her eyes were clear, her expression serene.
"I waited up for you tonight because I wanted to talk," Jillian said, meeting his gaze with absolute candor. "Before you left the hospital, you said it was time we ended things. I've been waiting for you to have a free moment. If you're available now, let's have a proper discussion about the divorce."
"Divorce?" Killian repeated in a low voice. "That's what you wanted to talk about?"
"Yes." Jillian nodded, her tone even and rational. "With how things are between us, divorce is the inevitable conclusion. I was too impatient before, rushing to get it over with, and that probably angered you. You've helped me a lot lately, and we've been getting along well with Connor. So, I thought about it, and I admit I shouldn't have taken the litigation route. For the sake of our child, let's part amicably. It's best for everyone."
"Part amicably." Killian rolled the words around his mouth, his tone devoid of any readable emotion.
Unable to discern his mood, Jillian braced herself and pressed on. "I overheard your phone call with Sylvia the other day. You two seem to be getting along well, and I imagine you have plans to take things further. Dragging this out will only hold us both back. It's better to end it cleanly. We can go our separate ways and live our own lives."
"Are you done?" Killian lifted his gaze to look at her.
Jillian nodded. "Yes."
"Then I have a question for you."
Killian interlaced his fingers, his dark eyes locking onto her, a storm of complex emotions swirling within them. After a brief silence, he enunciated every word:
"That night, when your migraine flared up, you walked out of a hotel with Sebastian 'Bash' Shaw."
Jillian froze instantly.
"I looked into it," Killian said, his voice ice-cold. "Bash doesn't have a permanent residence. He stays in hotels year-round. Tell me, why were you there in the middle of the night?"
