Jillian stepped out of the gallery, the blazing sun making her dizzy and nauseous.

But she had already come this far; she refused to turn around and flee now.

Making her way to the theater, she immediately spotted Killian and Sylvia standing near the stage.

Dressed to the nines, they looked effortlessly superior, a breathtaking power couple completely outshining the surrounding elite parents.

Connor stood right in front of them, dressed in his elaborate prince costume for the play.

They were deep in conversation with the stage director.

"After tonight's performance, there will be a group photo with all the children and parents. I hope you can spare a few minutes," the director said.

"Of course. I know our Connor can be a handful sometimes."

Smiling, Sylvia leaned down and affectionately patted Connor's head.

"Make sure you listen to your teacher, okay, Con?"

"I will!" Connor nodded enthusiastically.

The director beamed, clearly impressed. "Connor, your mother is incredibly young, beautiful, and so elegant."

Connor clearly caught the mistake. He looked up at Killian, then over at Sylvia.

But when neither adult bothered to correct the director, he kept his mouth shut, silently accepting the lie.

All the color vanished from Jillian's face. Taking a deep, shaky breath, she stepped forward. "Connor!"

Connor spun around, his eyes going wide with shock, clearly not expecting her to show up.

He mouthed the word 'Mom,' but no sound came out.

The director, an external professional hired specifically for the festival, didn't know the students' families. Assuming Jillian was just another curious parent, she smiled warmly.

"Oh, hello! Which student is yours?" she asked.

Jillian opened her mouth to speak, but the words caught in her throat.

"Oh, we're just old classmates," Sylvia seamlessly interjected, cutting her off.

"Ah, I see. I'll leave you to catch up then," the director smiled and walked away.

"Connor, haven't I always been the one to accompany you to these events?"

Jillian asked, her voice trembling slightly.

Connor looked at the floor, totally unable to formulate an excuse.

The teacher's expression grew even more strained. "Today is the opening performance..."

It was a polite warning that school executives and high-profile parents were in attendance, subtly begging them not to make a scene.

"Let's go." Ignoring the teacher, Killian let Sylvia loop her arm through his as they headed toward the VIP seating.

Jillian and the teacher were left standing alone in the aisle.

The teacher looked utterly mortified and on edge.

Not wanting to cause the woman any more grief, Jillian simply nodded. "I'm sorry."

With that, she turned and found her own seat.

The teacher let out a massive sigh of relief.

But the dread immediately returned.

All three of them were sitting in the same theater. This was a ticking time bomb. What if something happened during the show?

The teacher couldn't focus on the stage at all.

Sitting just one row behind Jillian, she kept her eyes glued to the back of her head, ready to physically restrain her if she tried anything crazy.
