Fortunately, the gridlock didn't last long. The accident was cleared quickly, and traffic resumed its normal flow.

Caleb hit the gas, accelerating smoothly, and arrived perfectly at 9:10 AM outside the registrar's office.

Killian stepped out of the car and immediately spotted Jillian waiting on the steps.

She was dressed in a sharp, professional suit—a crisp white button-down underneath a tailored forest-green coat. A sleek leather bag hung from her shoulder, and her dark hair was pulled into a flawless, elegant bun. The moment she saw him, the visible tension in her eyes completely evaporated.

Killian slammed the car door and strode up the stairs. Jillian took two steps down to meet him.

"How long have you been here?" Killian asked.

"Since 8:40."

Killian's eyes darkened a fraction, but he said nothing. They walked into the building side by side and pulled a ticket from the kiosk.

Inside, the marriage registration counter was mostly empty, the atmosphere warm and inviting. Conversely, the divorce counter had a massive line, practically suffocating under a thick blanket of gloom.

Before Killian could speak, Jillian broke the ice with a light, teasing tone. "It's fine, I'll consider it waiting half an hour for you this time. Just try to be punctual from now on."

The morning sun filtered through the glass windows, casting a soft glow over her face. She wore barely any makeup today, but thanks to a full night's sleep, her complexion was radiant and luminous, glowing with an energetic vibrancy.

The other couples in line were either scowling, glaring daggers at one another, or standing back-to-back, refusing to even acknowledge each other's existence.

Jillian was the only one who looked completely relaxed, her expression so open and carefree that anyone passing by would have assumed she was in the wrong line entirely.

Killian let out a cold, silent scoff, unable to pinpoint the exact knot twisting in his chest. He couldn't even remember the last time he'd seen her look so vibrant and unburdened.

After pulling their number, they sat on opposite ends of the waiting area.

Killian looked detached and exhausted. He didn't touch his phone or check his emails; he just sat there in total silence, enveloped in an aura of tired indifference.

Jillian, however, was incredibly busy. She was glued to her phone, firing off responses in her work group chats and organizing tasks online.

It wasn't long before their number was called.

Just like with every other divorcing couple, the clerk ran through the standard protocol, repeatedly confirming their intent to separate.

Jillian spoke first, her tone rock-solid. "Thank you, but we've discussed this thoroughly. We won't be changing our minds."

The clerk turned to Killian. He gave a brief nod, silently confirming.

"Since both parties are in agreement, we will proceed with the filing."

Jillian handed over the finalized divorce agreement and smoothly navigated the bureaucratic process with the clerk.

Once everything was filed, the clerk formally announced, "Your application has been processed. The thirty-day cooling-off period begins now. During this time, either of you can withdraw the application at any point."

Jillian nodded appreciatively. "Thank you."
