"She said Con is sick," Killian stated flatly.

Zach looked entirely unconvinced and immediately shot back, "If Con were really sick, the Quincy family would be the first to know! Why would it be her breaking the news? That kid is the school's top priority. If anything happened, the school would contact the Quincy family first. There's no way they'd call her. It's obviously an excuse to use the kid to arrange a meeting with you!"

Just as the words left his mouth, Killian's phone rang again.

The caller ID showed Connor's homeroom teacher.

Killian froze, then stood up and stepped aside to answer, his expression aloof. "I understand. I'll send someone over immediately."

Zach hadn't heard the conversation and assumed it was Jillian calling back. He couldn't help but grumble indignantly, "That woman is an absolute nightmare! Killian, you better not go soft and agree to see her!"

Killian ignored him. After hanging up, he immediately dialed Sienna's number to inform her about Connor's illness.

Upon hearing the news, Sienna said urgently, "I'll go to the school to pick him up right away. Leave Con to me, don't worry."

Ending the call, Sienna quickly instructed her driver to get the car ready.

Just as Killian finished handling the situation, Jillian's call came through again.

"I've already asked my mom to go to the school to pick up Con."

"There's no need," Killian replied bluntly. "I notified Sienna, and she'll pick him up."

Jillian immediately rejected the idea, her tone uncompromising. "No. Con has acute gastroenteritis and a fever. He could easily get dehydrated and needs someone to take care of him closely. It's too dangerous otherwise."

"Are you suggesting that people in the Quincy family can't even look after a child?" Killian countered.

"What else am I supposed to think?" Jillian's tone dripped with undisguised mockery.

Connor's grandfather was his biological grandfather, yet their relationship was distant, and he had never once taken care of the boy. His grandmother was just a title; she certainly wouldn't look after him properly.

No matter how many servants the Quincy family employed, there were hardly any close blood relatives around.

Killian opened his mouth, momentarily speechless.

A long moment passed.

"I understand," Killian yielded first, ending the call. He immediately called Sienna again to stop her from going.

On the other end, Sienna was already in the car, utterly bewildered. "What's wrong? I'm almost at the school. Aren't you out of town at a conference? I'm the best person to look after him."

"Don't bother coming," Killian said coldly and bluntly. "Jillian doesn't trust you."

Those few simple words instantly choked Sienna into silence.

She knew perfectly well that in Jillian's eyes, she had no blood relation to the child and was already an outsider. If Jillian didn't trust her, she certainly wouldn't hand the child over to her care.
