"What's wrong?" Sylvia noticed his tense posture and asked with faux concern.
"Nothing," Connor muttered.
"Are you feeling sick?" Sylvia reached out and felt his forehead—his temperature was normal. Then she playfully pinched his cheek. "Our Connor is growing up. He's got secrets now."
Connor's frown deepened. He jerked his head away, finally hitting his breaking point.
"Sylvia, can you stop dating my dad?"
Sylvia froze. She never imagined she would hear those words from him.
"Connor is getting older. He doesn't like a lot of physical affection," Killian explained smoothly.
Connor shot his father a look. That sounded like an excuse, but it didn't address the actual problem.
It was true he was at an age where he hated being touched by women he wasn't close to, and Sylvia was constantly boundary-stomping with her over-the-top affection.
But the real issue was that he simply refused to accept having a stepmother.
Stella hadn't spotted Judith at the gates.
Jillian honked the horn and rolled down the window. Spotting her, Stella bounded over.
"Mom! You're picking me up today?"
"Are you not happy about it?" Mallory Vaughn popped her head out from the backseat, sliding off her sunglasses.
"Mallory!" Stella cheered. "I'm so happy! This is the best day ever."
"Hop in. Mallory and I are taking you out for dinner," Jillian said.
"Yes!"
The second Stella buckled in, she started gossiping. "Mom, I just saw Connor's dad and his mistress."
Jillian frowned. "Don't say things like that. It's not polite."
"But she is the mistress," Stella argued.
Mallory instantly backed her up. "Exactly. She is a home-wrecker. If she's bold enough to do it, we're bold enough to say it."
Jillian shook her head in exasperation. "If Stella keeps hanging around you, she's going to end up a menace."
"She's not being a menace, she's speaking the truth," Mallory retorted.
