Mallory and Jillian exchanged a look.

Before Jillian could speak, Mallory jumped in. "You caught us. We've been stalking you this whole time. We don't have a tracker or anything, but we magically hacked your itinerary and followed your car all the way here. Wherever you go, we follow. Are you satisfied with that confession?"

Sylvia rolled her eyes, muttering, "Psycho."

"Who are you calling a psycho? Everyone knows about this tourist spot. If you can come here, why can't we? You were clearly trying to accuse us of following you, so I just gave you the answer you wanted!"

Sylvia ground her teeth in frustration. Mallory was famously fiery and possessed a razor-sharp tongue. Sylvia was completely outmatched. Retreating to Killian's side, she subtly reached for his hand.

Killian didn't pull away. Holding Jillian's gaze, he laced his fingers through Sylvia's.

Jillian quickly looked away, wanting no part in their performance.

"Connor! You're here too?" Stella asked brightly, entirely oblivious to the hostile tension between the adults.

Connor, who had been scowling since they bumped into them, relaxed slightly when he saw Stella and nodded.

"Are you eating candied hawthorn too?" Stella laughed. "Let's cheers."

Before Connor could react, she tapped her skewer against his, acting as if they were performing a highly formal toast.

The innocent joy of the kids defused the situation. Even Mallory and Sylvia lost interest in sniping at each other and focused on walking.

Both groups desperately wanted to go their separate ways, but it was a peak weekend, and the town was a massive tourist trap.

The cobblestone streets were gridlocked. With no room to maneuver, the two parties were forced to shuffle along with the herd toward the city walls.

The two kids, on the other hand, were having a blast, chatting and laughing the whole way.

The crowd moved at a snail's pace, and the autumn night air soon left everyone shivering. The kids stopped dead in their tracks when they spotted a street food vendor.

Having never tried traditional snacks like this before, they stared at the bubbling pots with wide eyes.
