"To make millions of dollars and have an endless supply of hot young men to fool around with. You?"
Jillian didn't say anything, simply turning her lantern so Mallory could read it.
Mallory covered her mouth, giggling wickedly.
Nearby, Sylvia was having Killian help her launch her lantern, their hands pressed together beneath the glowing paper.
Killian's gaze suddenly drifted over. He couldn't fully see Jillian, but he caught Mallory laughing hysterically, and just behind her shoulder, he saw Jillian looking utterly peaceful and radiant.
His eyes darkened. Jillian looked genuinely happy and at peace.
She was like a quiet but powerful river, flowing steadily toward a future that was entirely hers, refusing to pause for anyone ever again.
He just hadn't expected to see her this incandescent right before their divorce.
It was as if she had finally shed a suffocating weight.
"Killian, what are you thinking about?" Sylvia asked suddenly.
"Nothing," he replied evenly, withdrawing his gaze.
Connor and Stella were eager to launch their own lantern.
Connor wrote: Dad, Mom, and me, together forever.
Stella immediately protested. "Why is it just you and your mom? Where am I?"
"It's my family," Connor shot back.
"Fine, be stingy," Stella huffed. "I included you on mine."
Connor leaned over to peek. Stella hadn't written words.
She had grown up overseas, so writing intricate Chinese characters with a thick marker was impossible for her. Instead, she had drawn three stick figures: Jillian, herself, and Connor.
"Look, I even drew your dad so you wouldn't get sad," she pointed out.
"Where?" Connor asked.
"Right here. Can't you see the tiny man?"
Everyone glanced over at Stella's lantern. In the very bottom corner, she had scrawled a hideous stick figure—a lopsided head, two spindly legs, and a massive, bloated stomach.
