Jillian instinctively took a few steps forward, but the car didn't stop. Instead, it sped up and vanished from sight.

She was still wearing her work heels, and after just a few strides, she had to bend over, panting heavily.

The other parents gathered outside the school turned to stare at her. Jillian's face flushed with embarrassment.

She straightened up, pulled out her phone, and started walking in the direction the car had disappeared, biting her lip as she dialed Killian's number.

The phone rang endlessly. She called several times, but every single attempt went straight to voicemail.

Defeated, Jillian had no choice but to walk back and get into her own car.

Sitting in the back seat, Stella had witnessed the entire scene. She was both furious and confused. "Mom, what happened? Why didn't they stop to wait for you?"

Jillian swallowed the bitter lump in her throat and gently reassured her. "It's fine. They probably just didn't see us."

"There is no way they didn't see you!" Stella crossed her arms, puffing her cheeks in outrage. "I'm going to ask Connor about this right now!"

The two kids had added each other on their smartwatches and texted all the time.

Jillian felt a complicated knot of emotions but didn't say anything else, quietly starting the engine and driving them home.

The second they walked into her bedroom, Stella called Connor, her voice dripping with accusation. "What is your problem? Mom came specifically to pick you up, and you just drove away! She had to chase your car down the street. How could you do that?"

Connor sounded incredibly defensive on the other end of the line. "I told my dad to stop! He wouldn't let the driver pull over."

"It's always your dad!" Stella was furious and bitterly disappointed. "When we went on that trip, I thought he had changed. I thought he wasn't so awful anymore. But he hasn't changed at all. He's a total jerk!"

Connor let out a soft sigh. His father had always taken exceptionally good care of him. Hearing Stella bash him hurt, but Connor couldn't exactly defend him either.

During their trip, Connor had noticed the tension between his parents thawing. When they officially decided to get the divorce, his dad had even sat him down and talked him through it.

He thought everything was finally getting better, but today, his father's sudden, chilling indifference left even Connor completely baffled.

No wonder Stella was so angry.
