Daniel smiled to himself, thinking that if Leon knew exactly who she was married to, he'd be even more shocked.

Jillian brought Connor home, but the boy immediately demanded she take him out to play.

Jillian looked conflicted. "Mommy doesn't have time today. How about another day?"

"Mommy, what is wrong with you lately? Every time you come home, you're always rushing, and you never have time for me. You don't love me as much as you used to."

Jillian opened her mouth to argue but checked the time.

She couldn't keep Daniel waiting indefinitely.

"How about I have your dad come home to keep you company?"

"But I want you."

The moment Connor said those words, Jillian's defenses completely crumbled.

She began rationalizing it in her head: she and Daniel were good friends, but this was her first time properly meeting Leon. Skipping his welcome dinner wasn't the end of the world.

She pulled out her phone to call Daniel and explain the situation.

Thinking she had changed her mind and was staying, Connor sprinted excitedly up the stairs toward his bedroom.

Jillian followed closely behind, still dialing.

Connor tossed his backpack aside and immediately dug out his smartwatch.

He wasn't allowed to wear it at school, but he had free rein in the evenings.

He pulled it out and eagerly dialed a number. Jillian's call to Daniel wasn't going through, so she redialed.

Just as she reached Connor's bedroom door, she heard his call connect.

"Sylvia, I have great news!" Connor's voice was brimming with pride, exactly like a child eagerly waiting for an adult's praise.

Jillian froze dead in her tracks.

"My mom originally wanted to make my dad stay with me today, but I remembered that you and dad are having dinner tonight. I didn't want her to ruin your date, so I made her stay home with me instead!"

"Yeah, you and dad go have fun eating! I'll be really good and listen to my mom."

Jillian didn't hear what Sylvia said in response before the call clicked off.

"Mommy can't get out of this. I have to go out tonight. Have Mrs. Zeller play with you."

Connor's little face instantly fell.

"Mommy, my teacher said parents are supposed to spend as much time with their kids as possible!"

Jillian thought to herself: *Yes, that's exactly the lie I used to brainwash myself with.*

She used to tell herself that no career was more important than her child. That these fleeting years of his childhood would vanish in the blink of an eye and never return.

So, she had willingly sacrificed absolutely everything. And what did she get in return?

"That's right. And for most of your life, Mommy has been the one spending all that time with you. But you're a boy, and you're growing up. You need your dad to spend more time with you so you can become brave and confident."

Jillian forced herself to keep her tone patient.

"I'm not listening! I'm not listening!" Connor shouted, clapping his hands over his ears.

Jillian stood up and dialed her phone. A moment later, Killian's voice echoed through the line.

"What do you want?"
