When Simon and Nina heard the name “Professor Alex Summer,” they shot each other a look, their eyes revealing a flash of surprise.
But they kept quiet.
Right now, a life was at stake, and catching the killer was all that mattered.
As the sky grew darker, Simon and Nina’s first day of investigation was anything but smooth.
The little critters started showing up one after another, but they all came back empty-handed, still no key clues.
Pearlie slunk back onto Nina’s shoulder, head drooping and voice muffled.
“Nina, I sniffed every inch of Building Two. I really couldn’t pick up any trace of the victim’s blood,” he said.
Nina gently stroked his tiny head, her voice soft with comfort. “It’s okay, sweetie.
“Simon told me before that this is just how investigations go. You can’t expect to crack every case in a flash.
“Hitting roadblocks and setbacks is totally normal.”
As Nina spoke, she pulled out a piece of meat jerky she’d brought just for Pearlie and held it to his mouth, her tone cheerful. “We’ve gotta train ourselves to stay positive.
“You weren’t even scared of that big tiger. This is nothing! Be brave. Nothing can stop you!”
Pearlie wiggled his nose, leaned in to sniff the jerky, and finally took a nibble. The tip of his tail perked up again, ever so slightly.
The Squirrel Bros scampered back, their fluffy tails hanging limp in disappointment. “Nina, we checked with the birds up in the trees.
“They told us that Building Two has been packed these last few days. Everyone was wearing hats and masks, pushing big crates around. It’s seriously impossible to tell who’s shady.”
Chubby nudged Nina’s hand and chirped, “But we’ve already handed out little portraits of the victim to all our critter pals nearby. Maybe we’ll get some fresh leads tomorrow!”
Earlier that day, with the victim’s family’s permission, Nina printed out mini-portraits and asked the Squirrel Bros to help spread the word.
Coco suddenly perked up, bouncing over to add, “Oh, right! Tabby King says he’s not coming home tonight. He’s heading out to expand his intel network, so don’t wait up for him!”
Nina couldn’t help but chuckle at how serious they looked and gave them a nod. “Alright, you guys did awesome today. Thanks for all your hard work.”

With that, the two little squirrels tucked themselves back into their carrier, snuggling up close and drifting off to sleep.
Those little guys were absolutely wiped out after everything today.
As the cops started wrapping things up for the day, Nina and Simon caught up with the rest of the squad at the entrance of Building Two.
Zacariah rushed over, grinning ear to ear. “Ms. Summer, Mr. Reed, big news! We finally spotted someone super suspicious on the tapes!”
He whipped out his tablet, showing them several zoomed-in, enhanced shots.
On screen, a scrawny figure was pushing a cart with an oversized crate on top. Her face was completely hidden behind a hat and mask, so one couldn’t tell who it was. But she looked to be about 5 feet, and on the skinny side.
“Thanks to the surveillance analyst Professor Summer brought in,” Zacariah said, his voice full of admiration. “That guy’s got eyes like a hawk. He managed to pick this person out from a mountain of messy footage!”
Alex shot them a cocky grin. “Looks like you two didn’t find much today, huh?”
But Nina and Simon acted like they didn’t even catch the jab, totally absorbed in studying the surveillance footage on Zacariah’s phone.
Simon even tilted the screen a bit, quietly pointing out the killer’s gait to Nina.
Alex had expected to see defeat or frustration on their faces, but instead, Simon and Nina both looked up together, their expressions bright with genuine joy.
Nina spoke with heartfelt sincerity, “The analyst from Professor Summer’s team managed to pinpoint the suspect’s outline from the footage. That’s a major breakthrough!
“This is fantastic. We’re getting even closer to the truth.”
Simon, eyes still fixed on the screen, replied calmly, “Judging by the way she walks and shifts her weight, the suspect is most likely female.
“The faster we share these clues, the sooner we’ll crack this case.”
Alex let out a sly chuckle, a hint of sarcasm in his tone. “Guess my crew hit the jackpot. At least all that running around didn’t go to waste.
“Not like some folks who were hustling all day, and still had to rely on us to get it done.”
But Nina’s eyes were honest and unwavering as she answered, “Any clue we find is a win. Saving lives is what matters, and whether we’re detectives or cops, we’re always fighting on the same team.
“The real enemy here is the murderer.”
Simon nodded, cool and firm. “If we waste time arguing about credit or who got there first, the killer’s already

long gone. It’s the result that counts. It’s about making sure the victim gets justice.”

As their words lingered in the air, the open teamwork vibes between Simon and Nina were like a mirror. Suddenly, Alex’s scheming just seemed narrow-minded and embarrassingly petty by comparison.
Zacariah scratched his head and chimed in, “Professor Summer, just so you know, it was Mr. Reed who first told us to put the spotlight on whoever was moving the renovation supplies.
