Mr. Crow fluffed up his tail feathers and started updating Nina on how things were going for Rose at Summer Veterinary Group.
Mr. Crow said, “Honestly, Nina, Rose looks so down in the dumps every day, coming and going like the sky’s about to fall. I’ve seen her tear up more than once.
“Word from the little parrot who came in for a check-up. Rose can’t hold a candle to the other vets, so she gets saddled with every lousy chore, and everyone just orders her around.
“Sometimes, they even call her when she’s halfway home to drag her back for overtime.”
Nina shook her head, quietly thinking to herself, ‘Serves her right. Could’ve seen that coming’
Suddenly, Nina remembered the pet vaccine the Summer family was about to launch. She leaned in close to Mr. Crow and whispered, “Hey, Mr. Crow, could you help me deliver a note? I’ll even throw in some travel expenses for you.”
Mr. Crow immediately straightened up, puffing out his chest like a professional courier. “You got it!”
Nina stifled a laugh and leaned in to whisper her instructions in Mr. Crow’s ear. Just as Mr. Crow was about to take off, Coco suddenly came dashing over, looking all flustered.
“Nina, something’s wrong!” Coco yelled, his voice shaking with anxiety.
Seeing Coco, who was usually cool and mature, totally freaking out, Nina felt her heart leap in her chest. “Did Chubby get grabbed by a monster?”
“Close enough!” Coco scrambled up onto Nina, hugging her arm tight with his little paws, nearly in tears.
“Chubby’s in trouble. Someone’s blackmailing him!” Coco burst out, barely holding back a sob.
Mr. Crow fluffed up his feathers and squawked, “What? Who dares bully Chubby!”
Nina reached out and gently patted Coco’s head, her voice laced with urgency.
“Hurry, take me there!” she urged.
Coco instantly darted ahead to lead Nina to Chubby.
As they hurried to rescue Chubby, Nina kept pace with the very irate Coco, asking, “Who’s blackmailing Chubby?”
Coco immediately put his paws on his hips, cheeks puffed out in pure rage. “It’s a gang of bird thugs! They claimed they’d seen the victim the day she disappeared.”
Coco got more worked up by the second, tail all puffed up. “But they refused to tell Chubby anything unless he handed over every single snack!

“Chubby, being way too trusting, gave them all his treats, and since there were so many of them, they just blocked him in so he couldn’t get away!
“Now they’re demanding even more snacks from Chubby. Those birds are straight-up robbers!”
Nina exclaimed, “Are you kidding me? There are birds out there this sneaky and unreasonable?”
Mr. Crow squawked, “Do those dumb little punks even know who they’re messing with?”
Before long, Nina spotted the gang of “bird thugs” Coco had mentioned, hiding out in the tall grass behind Building Two.
These little birds were barely the size of a palm, with snowy feathers and black patches around their heads, making them look just like tiny robbers wearing black masks.
These bandit-looking birds were actually a subspecies of a city-dwelling species.
They were known as white wagtails, a breed that was pretty common in urban areas.
Right now, a gang of six or seven little thug birds had Chubby penned in, chirping out all sorts of threats.
“Fork over every snack you got, right now!” one of them barked.
Chubby hugged his tiny paws close, his big pleading eyes filling with tears. “I swear. I’m all out.”
“Ugh… Didn’t you say if I gave you all my treats, you’d give me the clue?” Chubby sniffled.
The thug birds didn’t bother letting Chubby explain himself. They just kept bossing Chubby around like they ran the place.
“Because you haven’t handed over enough yet!” one squawked.
“This kind of clue doesn’t come cheap! Keep those snacks coming!” another chirped.
“If you don’t listen to us, we’ll peck your butt!” one threatened.
“We’ll peck your butt bald and send you home mooning everyone!” another cackled.
Nina thought, ‘Damn, this is so freaking frustrating! These tiny crook birds actually act like a whole crew of petty street punks!’
Nina instantly balled her fists, her eyes flashing with anger. “Mr. Crow, time to show those punks who’s boss!”
She barely got the words out before Mr. Crow shot forward like a rocket, snatching a white wagtail right by the head with razor-sharp precision.
“You’ve got some nerve, huh? Trying to extort someone while they’re under my wing? Do you have a death wish?” Mr. Crow thundered, voice dripping with menace.
Mr. Crow didn’t stop at words. With his wings flapping wildly, he went on a wing-slapping spree, smacking every one of those cocky little thug birds hard, leaving none untouched.

The moment two of the white wagtails in the distance realized things were going south, they started flapping their wings in a panic, trying to bolt.
“Where do you think you’re going!” Mr. Crow shouted, his voice sharp as a whip. “Wanna see me call Golden Eagle to snipe you out of the sky?”
The two white wagtails stiffened in terror mid-takeoff and dropped straight to the ground, necks hunched and not daring to twitch a feather.
Once Chubby was finally set free, Chubby darted over and latched onto Nina’s leg, wailing, “Nina, you finally came to rescue me!”
Nina’s heart twisted with sympathy as she bent down, tenderly scooped Chubby into her arms, and softly stroked his little furry head. “No more tears, it’s all okay now. The bad birds got what they deserved.”
Chubby hiccuped and wriggled deeper into Nina’s embrace, his fluffy body shivering all over, looking utterly pitiful but still impossibly cute.
Three minutes later, those seven cocky little bird punks who’d been acting all tough were now lined up like school kids, hanging their heads in shame in front of Mr. Crow and Chubby, totally chickening out and begging for mercy.
“Sorry! We were wrong!” they shouted together, all shaking like leaves.
Mr. Crow puffed himself up, pacing back and forth like a no-nonsense school principal in front of a line of “problem students.” Every step he took made those seven white wagtails duck their heads even lower, nearly burying their faces in the dirt.
With his wings coolly folded behind him, Mr. Crow spoke in a low tone: “Alright, tell me. What did you screw up?”
“We shouldn’t have shaken down Chubby for snacks. And we really shouldn’t have tried to steal his food either,” the birds muttered miserably, voices overlapping in guilty, sheepish whispers.
Chubby plopped himself down to the side, hugging the nut he’d just managed to reclaim, happily munching away while soaking up the spectacle with a smug little wiggle of his tail.
Mr. Crow fixed the birds with a hard stare. “You said you saw the victim the day she went missing. Are you telling the truth, or trying to play me?”
The seven thug birds instantly started bobbing like chickens pecking for seeds, nodding so fast you’d think their necks might snap.
They squawked together, voices shaking with fear. “Boss, it’s true! None of us would ever dare lie to you!”
“We saw that victim in the photo chatting with a girl, and then the two of them got into a real argument,” the little birds squawked all at once, voices still shaking with fear.
Nina stepped right up, her voice gentle as she pressed, “Where did you see them?”
One of the white wagtails shrank back at hearing a human, but Mr. Crow slammed his wing down beside it
