The Fake Heiress and Her Purrfect Partner novel Chapter 14

Chapter 14

When Amber finally heard her parents say they were on their way to get her, a wave of relief washed over her, making her feel safe once again. She wiped the tears streaming down her face and turned to Nina with a shaky smile. “Thank you so much,” she whispered. “I’m Amber. What’s your name? And how did you find me?”

Her voice trembled, and fresh tears threatened to fall. “I honestly thought… I thought today would be the day I wouldn’t make it.”

Nina quickly handed her a tissue, offering a reassuring smile. “I’m Nina. I run the zoo nearby, but there’s more to it—I’m an animal communicator. That means I can pick up on signals animals send and understand what they’re trying to say.”

Nina knew that after crossing paths with criminals twice already, the police would soon be looking for her. She needed a believable explanation to ease any suspicion and relieve some of the pressure she was under.

Back when she studied abroad, she had heard about genuine animal communicators—people who could somewhat understand animals. But compared to Nina’s abilities, they barely scratched the surface. For her, talking to animals felt as natural as breathing. This skill was the perfect cover for her secret life.

Amber’s eyes sparkled with curiosity. “An animal communicator? That’s pretty rare. So, you found me because…?”

Nina pointed toward a small vent where Little Crow peeked out, his feathers slightly ruffled. “This little guy wouldn’t leave me alone all night. He kept fluttering around, acting anxious, like he was trying to tell me something was wrong.”

“After work, Simon—he’s a cop—came to pick me up. We followed Little Crow, and well, who would’ve guessed we’d find you here,” Nina explained.

Amber let out a long breath of relief. “I’m so lucky to have run into an animal communicator and a cop right when I needed them the most.”

She smiled warmly at Nina and Simon. “You two make the perfect team. One uses animals to sniff out trouble, and the other’s a pro at handling criminals. Honestly, you’re like the ultimate MVP support and jungler combo.”

Nina chuckled softly, admitting to herself that she and Simon really did work well together.

Simon nodded reassuringly at Amber. “Don’t worry. More officers will be arriving soon. Later, we’ll need your help with a statement.”

Amber stole a quick glance at Simon, feeling her cheeks flush a bright shade of red. She quickly looked away and tugged on Nina’s sleeve, whispering, “Wow, your brother is seriously good-looking! You two really stand out.”

At that moment, Little Crow swooped down and perched proudly on Nina’s shoulder, puffing up his feathers like a tiny hero. In his mind, he was boasting, “Hey, lady, I’m the one who saved your life tonight!”

Though Amber couldn’t understand his caws, she sensed the bird was making quite a fuss. Tilting her head, she asked, “Nina, what’s up with this crow? What’s he so worked up about?”

Nina grinned. “He wants some credit too. Thinks he deserves all the praise.”
