Nina watched the chubby little groundhogs basking in the sun nearby, and suddenly her eyes sparkled.
Nina said, “Maybe our furry neighbors could lend us a paw.
“Of course, we’ll need the whole clan to pitch in, so it’s going to take some work. And you know, we ought to reward them for their effort.”
Eloise caught on immediately and didn’t hesitate. She said, “If they can help us solve the irrigation issue, the station will provide their entire family with twenty pounds of the newest fruit, cucumbers, and golden cherry tomatoes every week.
“Plus, another ten pounds of our special sweet potatoes. Guaranteed to be the freshest and sweetest around!”
Nina crouched down and gently poked a few sun-bathing, chubby groundhogs with a twig. She said, ‘Come on, sleepyheads, rise and shine! Time to get to work!
“Ms. Nimbus’s precious little plants are dying of thirst. We need to help them find a new spot of groundwater-make sure it’s super clean and sweet!”
The groundhogs stretched out lazily, rubbed their eyes, and then tumbled upright, chattering all at once.
One said, “Leave it to us.”
Another said, “We’re pros at finding water.”
A third said, “We’ll go call neighbors from the next burrow to join in.”
Simon watched as Nina teamed up so naturally with the fluffballs, his lips curling into an indulgent smile. He said, “Nina, you lead this groundhog scouting squad to help Ms. Nimbus track down a new water source.
“I’ll head back to Oakridge Village and keep watch over things.”
He paused and added in a gentle voice, “Stay safe-and text me if anything comes up.”
Nina winked at him, grinning. She said, “Got it! Go ahead, we’ve got our very own underground intel network working for
us!”
With Nina acting as both translator and leader, the groundhog clan showed off their true skills as underground locals.
They quickly pinpointed a new water source down on a lower slope. The best part? The soil here was loose and the water table shallow-no need for deep digging or heavy equipment.
“Just run the pipes down through their old tunnels!” Nina shouted.
At her signal, a few veteran groundhogs stepped up like a seasoned mini work crew, nimbly hauling the irrigation hoses before diving straight into their network of tunnels.
Nina stood to the side, consulting with the technicians and relaying instructions, precisely guiding the direction and depth of the pipes.
The engineer in charge of the pump watched, totally stunned, as the hose disappeared in a flash down the tunnel.
He thought, ‘Wow, this is literally my first time teaming up with groundhog engineers!
He was still trying to wrap his head around all this when, with a little “pop”, the lead groundhog burst out from another hole, drumming its tiny paws on the earth.

It shouted, “Mission accomplished! Start up the pump already-don’t just sit there staring!”

The engineer flicked the switch, and crystal-clear groundwater came rushing out instantly. He was so shocked he nearly thought he was dreaming.
“This is insanely fast! We just saved ourselves days of work!” he blurted out.
Eloise pushed up her glasses, staring in awe. She exclaimed, “Ms. Summer, the way you team up with animals is absolutely amazing!
“You even managed to turn these little guys into a full-on construction team!”
Nina brushed off the compliment with a shy smile. She said, “Honestly, I didn’t do much-the real brains are these clever little guys.
“When you let them follow their instincts, everything suddenly gets a whole lot easier.”
As she spoke, Nina bent down and scratched the groundhog’s chubby head through her gloves, with a touch of pride in her voice.
She added, “Sometimes these furry little detectives have even helped me supply important leads to the local police!”
Eloise’s eyes grew even brighter as she listened. She thought, ‘This is exactly the kind of expert we’ve been hoping for at our agricultural base!
A unique advisor who can not only read animal behavior, but actually work in sync with them!’
Instantly, she thought of all the troublesome problems on the base-like those clever birds always sneaking into the test fields to swipe the best seeds and freshly ripened berries.
Setting up bird nets could hurt them, and it messed with the sunlight for the plants, too.
And when it came to spraying biological treatments, there was always this nagging worry about accidentally hurting those hardworking bees and pollinators busy in the fields.
If they had someone like Nina-an animal communicator-on their team, all these ecological headaches wouldn’t be problems anymore!
But then Eloise caught a glimpse of Simon heading off in a hurry, and her rational side kicked in.
Right now, Nina was clearly caught up in some important police work, so this wasn’t the best time to pitch her an offer.
So Eloise had no choice but to keep her excitement under wraps and hold off on trying to recruit Nina for now.
“We really couldn’t have done it without you,” Eloise said sincerely, handing her business card to Nina and smiling warmly at the groundhog construction crew.
“You’re always welcome to visit the base-there’ll always be something delicious waiting for you here,” she added.
With that, she had her assistant bring out fresh fruit and specially prepared hay to treat the groundhogs.
At the same time, she carefully selected the base’s latest produce and top-quality seeds, packing them into a generous gift
basket for Nina.
Every piece of fruit and vegetable was plump, perfectly shaped, and glistened with an irresistible sheen-one could tell at a glance they were the very best.
Nina accepted the gift, her heart giving a little leap. She thought, ‘Man, how amazing would it be if the animals at Forest Isle Zoo could munch on this kind of fresh, wholesome, and perfectly balanced custom blend feed every day.
