Chapter 16
Amber’s parents hurried over, their faces etched with worry. “Dad, Mom, I’m fine,” Amber reassured them, her voice steady as she tried to soothe their panic. Her mother wrapped her arms around her in a tight embrace, and Amber gently rubbed her mother’s shoulder in return, offering silent comfort.
Harold Chandler, Amber’s father, recognized Alex immediately and his expression brightened. He extended his hand warmly. “Professor Summer, I’ve heard so much about you.”
Alex smiled warmly and gave a respectful nod. “Mr. Chandler, it’s a pleasure to meet you.”
From Alex’s composed demeanor, Nina immediately sensed that Harold was someone important. Alex rarely showed such friendliness, especially only to those with significant influence—people who outranked even the Summers.
“I’ve always known you’re the go-to expert for solving tough cases, Professor. Honestly, without you and the police, my daughter wouldn’t be safe right now,” Harold said, gripping Alex’s hand firmly, his gratitude genuine.
Amber shot up from where she’d been sitting, clearly irritated as her father thanked the wrong person. Alex simply nodded, as if it was no big deal.
“Dad, seriously! Get a grip,” Amber snapped, stepping in front of Nina and Simon. “Can’t you even recognize who actually saved me? It was Nina. She found me tied up in that creepy basement and called the cops.”
Amber then gestured toward Simon. “And this guy? That’s her brother. The psycho who kidnapped me had a knife ready, but Simon busted in, kicked the door down, and knocked the guy out cold before cuffing him. He’s seriously incredible.”
Harold’s face flushed with embarrassment as he realized his mistake. ‘Why didn’t Professor Summer correct me?’ he thought, feeling awkward.
He quickly turned to Nina and Simon, apologizing profusely. “I’m so sorry. I was completely panicked when Amber was missing for six hours—I lost my mind. Thank you both. You’re the real heroes here.”
Joss Chandler, Amber’s mother, reached out and took Nina’s hand, her voice warm and full of gratitude. “Thank you, sweetheart. You and your brother saved my daughter’s life.”
Without hesitation, Joss slipped off a beautiful bracelet and fastened it onto Nina’s wrist. “I don’t have much to offer, so please just take this. Consider it a small token of thanks.”
Nina, no stranger to the ways of wealthy families, stared wide-eyed at the dazzling bracelet. It was stunning, clearly worth a fortune. “This is way too expensive. I really can’t accept it,” she said gently.
Nina tried to refuse, but Joss was surprisingly insistent. Before Nina could protest further, the bracelet was securely clasped around her wrist.
Harold pulled out his checkbook from his jacket pocket, quickly scribbled a check, and handed it along with his business card to Nina.
