Chapter 187 Kestrel Wakes Up

Chapter 187 Kestrel Wakes Up

When Nina heard what Simon said, the tiredness on her face vanished instantly, and her gaze sharpened.

“If anyone dares to lay a hand on my zoo, they’ll pay for it!” Nina vowed.

Nina stared at Simon, who had suddenly shown up in the medical center, then something clicked in her mind. “Simon, weren’t you supposed to investigate the two spots where the driver parked?”

“How come you’re back so soon? Did you discover anything?” Nina pressed.

Simon nodded, his face serious. “The gas station where the driver stopped was covered by lots of security cameras and packed with people. We didn’t spot anything out of the ordinary there.”

“But that convenience store,” Simon hesitated for a moment. “There’s a blind spot in the surveillance-they only got the front of the car on tape.”

He went on, “I’m betting the killer must’ve snuck the kite handle into the car while the driver was inside the store.

“We didn’t catch the act on tape, but the others and I checked every camera around the convenience store.

“I kept spotting this guy in a gray hoodie popping up again and again in the footage.”

Simon’s gaze was ice-cold and focused. “Judging from this guy’s movement pattern, I’m almost sure he got right up to that truck parked outside the convenience store.”

Simon flipped the folder open on the table, revealing rows of surveillance screenshots laid out with precision.

Each shot had been meticulously marked and color-coded with different markers, arrows neatly connecting them into a clear, step-by-step map of the suspect’s path.

Nina stared at the dense but perfectly organized web of analysis, admiration in her eyes. “Simon, the way you map all this out is absolutely brilliant-”

Simon said, “All that’s left is for Kestrel to wake up. Then we’ll finally know whether the person flying the kite is the same suspect in the gray hoodie we’ve seen on the surveillance tapes.”

Simon gently rested his hand on Nina’s head, letting his warmth calm and reassure her.

Staring at Kestrel lying unconscious in the operating room, Simon spoke with a steady, resolute voice. “Don’t put too much pressure on yourself.

“The truth isn’t going to change just because it takes a little longer-what matters how is that you get some rest,” Simon said softly.

“And remember, no matter what comes your way, I’m always your strongest support,” Simon reassured her.

“I’m heading back to the station for my shift. You-” Simon had barely started talking when a lithe gray shadow flashed past the doorway.

Shadow, the majestic wolfdog, trotted in and circled Nina’s legs, nuzzling her affectionately.

Quentin followed right behind, setting a lunchbox gently on the table. “Eat,” he ordered.

He glanced at Nina, a firm note of concern in his voice. “If you wear yourself out, how can you help me win over those rich clients from Sahan?”

With that, Quentin grabbed another lunchbox from James and offered it to Simon. “You’ve had a rough day too, Mr. Reed.” Simon declined with a calm look, meeting Quentin’s eyes. “Thanks, Mr. Hayes, but I’m good. We’ve got food at the station- and the zoo, too.”

He added with a nod, “Still, I really appreciate you jumping in so fast for Nina’s zoo today.”

Quentin just quirked an eyebrow at Simon’s blunt reply, not quite sure whether to be amused or challenged.

But Simon’s voice suddenly cooled, his eyes sharp as a blade. “Let’s get one thing clear.”

“Keep your distance from my sister. Anything she needs, I’ll take care of it myself,” Simon declared, his protective edge unmistakable.

Their stares collided in mid-air, neither man willing to give an inch,

Simon gave Quentin one last, hard look before striding out without another word.

James handed out the rest of the nutritious me to the

door, leaving the room to Quentin and Nina.

Nina kept eating, and with every bite, her stomach just started growling louder-she hadn’t realized how hungry she actually was.

Quentin sat quietly next to her, focused on his paperwork. His own lunch barely had a dent in it, just sitting there untouched.

Suddenly, something clicked in Nina’s mind. She put her fork down, looking genuinely apologetic. “Oh no! I just remembered -I promised I’d make you a special lunch today, but I got so busy that it completely slipped my mind.”

She shot Quentin an embarrassed glance. “And on top of that, I dragged you all over the place with me all day,” Nina thought, feeling a bit guilty.

She mulled it over seriously, then made up her mind and offered, “How about I let you in as a special investor in my zoo?

“I’ll give you a cut of the profits! I promise, my zoo’s only going to get more and more successful from now on!”

Quentin chuckled low, tapping her on the forehead with the blunt end of his fork.

“Honestly, I thought you’d try to make it up to me with a check. But in the end, it’s still my wallet that takes the hit, huh?” he said, a rare glimmer of a smile in his eyes.

“That’s one sharp brain you’ve got,” Quentin raised an eyebrow, his tone somewhere between exasperated and impressed.” Did you learn these business tricks from Mr. Crow?”

Nina slapped her hand to her forehead, sounding half-desperate and dead serious. “I’m really not joking, okay?”

“I mean it-I’m not hyping things up, and I’m definitely not just trying to drag you into some risky investment.

“My zoo is gonna blow up, for real! You’ll see, it’s going to make you rich, I promise!” Nina declared, her eyes shining with determination.

Quentin gave her a soft look. “I trust you.”

He slid the open lunchbox toward her, signaling for her to eat. “Don’t keep worrying about thanking me-I just did what any

doctor should.”

He paused, his voice more solemn than usual. “You need to keep a firm grip on your zoo shares. Never let them go.

“Only then will you have absolute freedom-to do anything you want.”

Quentin’s eyes, always cool and distant, now gleamed with genuine seriousness. |

He looked up at her, both warning and reminding. “Don’t be silly and give them away to others, okay?”

“I’m not that dumb!” Nina fired back instantly.

Shadow perked right up, tongue hanging out and tail wagging like crazy, jumping in to defend her.

“Quentin! Nina isn’t dumb-she’s just got total faith in you! Shadow said, his mind practically radiating loyalty.

Nina was left speechless at Shadow’s words, her cheeks instantly burning bright red.

Quentin noticed Shadow squatting beside Nina, tail wagging like crazy, and assumed the dog was shamelessly taking Nina’ s side again. He reached out and gave Shadow’s ear a playful tug.

“Why do you always turn against your own team and side with outsiders?” Quentin mocked, raising an eyebrow.
