Chapter 226
Before the call was cut off, Simon warned coldly, “If you dare touch Nina before I get there, you’ll pay for it.
The line went dead. Quentin put down his phone, annoyed.
He glanced down at his arm, which had gone numb from Nina clinging to him. He couldn’t help but feel helpless.
In fact, it was Nina who got handsy.
Maybe it was Quentin’s resentful stare that finally woke her up. Nina’s lashes fluttered, and she groggily opened her eyes.
The first thing she saw was Quentin’s handsome face looming just inches away, his expression dark.
“Quentin?” Her voice was hoarse from just waking up, and she instinctively reached to rub her aching temples.
But then she suddenly realized she was still gripping his arm.
Quentin pulled his arm back awkwardly.
Suddenly, Nina’s mind flashed back to all those moments when her hands were roaming all over him, and her cheeky comments.
Her cheeks flushed bright red, and even the tips of her ears turned pink.
Last night, she had been so out of it from the fever that she could only vaguely know that someone was looking after her gently and patiently.
She had assumed it was Sophia, the assistant on duty at the zoo. But she never expected it to be Quentin.
Nina felt like her whole world had just been turned upside down.
Quentin rubbed his numb arm and said, “Last night, Pearlie found you running a fever and came looking for me.”
He paused, his eyes landing on Nina’s bright red face, and drawled, “Then you kept clinging to my hand and wouldn’t let go.”
Nina wished the ground would swallow her. Frantically, she grabbed Pearlie, who was still sound asleep.
She buried her flushed face in Pearlie’s fluffy fur, her voice muffled as she tried to change the subject. “Pearlie, thank you for saving me.”
Quentin said calmly, “What about me?”
Nina’s heart skipped a beat. She looked up, meeting Quentin’s intense gaze. Her cheeks flushed even more.
She scrambled to fix her blunder. “Of course, I have to thank you, too, Dr. Hayes. I-I’ll treat you to dinner.”

Chapter 226
Quentin reminded her, “You owe me more than just one dinner.”
“I’ll totally make it up to you. Promise! This week, I’ll pay you back for every single meal. And you get to choose the place,” Nina said firmly.
“Slow down, don’t push yourself,” Quentin said. Noticing Nina’s pale lips, he handed her a cup of water.
Quentin cast a fleeting glance toward the door. “Simon’s probably gearing up to come after me. Honestly, I don’t think I’ll make it to the meal,” Quentin joked.
Nina froze, caught off guard. “Huh?”
“Simon called just now. I answered,” Quentin said, sounding too calm for what he was about to drop. “And, well, he probably heard your reviews about how I felt to hold. He might get the wrong impression.”
Nina’s brain short-circuited. ‘So freaking doomed! There’s no getting out of this now, she thought anxiously.
Just then, Quentin grabbed his stethoscope and signalled her for another quick check.
Nina felt super sheepish. She sat there quietly, doing her absolute best to play the model patient.
Quentin put on his stethoscope. The cold metal touched her chest.
The stethoscope amplified every sound. His deep voice seemed to hit her right in the ear. “How are you feeling now?”
Nina held her breath, trying to ignore the cold touch and his deep, magnetic voice echoing in her ears.
She answered softly, “My head still hurts a little, but it’s better than last night.”
Quentin listened for a moment, then looked at her. “Your heart’s racing a bit.”
“M-Maybe it’s just because my fever just broke,” Nina stammered.
Nina’s eyes flickered everywhere, scrambling for an excuse, but her cheeks flushed even more.
Was he teasing me on purpose, or was that just an accident?’ Nina wondered.
Just as the air between them turned charged, the dorm door clicked open. Simon stood in the doorway holding an insulated lunch box, as if he had just stepped in from the winter cold.
His sharp gaze swept over the room, zeroing in on Quentin and Nina, who were standing uncomfortably close to each other by the bed.
Just as Simon was about to blow a fuse, Quentin calmly took off his stethoscope as if he were just wrapping up a routine check-up.
He looked up, meeting Simon’s scrutinizing gaze, and greeted him with a casual tone. “Mr. Reed.”
Meanwhile, Shadow was sprawled out in the corner, flicking his tail and settling into an even cozier position.

Chapter 226
Go, Quentin! Conquer Simon!’ Shadow cheered inwardly.
“Simon,” Nina blurted out, her heart skipping a beat when she saw the cold look on Simon’s face.
She rushed to explain, words tumbling out, “Don’t get the wrong idea. Last night, I had a fever and just kept clinging to Dr. Hayes’s hand. Seriously, I’m the one who should apologize. I wasted his time.”
