Chapter 26
The sleek red Ferrari roared down the road, but instead of heading straight for Pinehill Manor, Jason took a sharp turn. The car came to a smooth stop in front of a modest, standalone building that looked more like an art studio or an exclusive private club than anything else.
Jason seemed to be in charge here. The moment he stepped inside and gave a casual wave, a small team quickly surrounded Nina, immediately setting to work on her appearance. Their precision and speed were impressive, almost like a well-rehearsed performance.
Within the span of an hour, Nina was unrecognizable. She slipped into an elegant evening gown, the fabric flowing gracefully around her as she prepared to leave. Climbing back into Jason’s car, she absentmindedly touched the delicate diamond-studded pendant resting against her neck, a surreal feeling washing over her. It was as if she had stepped into a dream she never wanted to wake from.
Nina had always assumed Jason was just another wealthy playboy, but discovering he owned a styling studio was a revelation. She smiled softly, feeding a few small snacks from the studio to the two squirrels nestled in their carrier.
Chubby nibbled contentedly, his tiny mouth making soft crunching sounds. “Yummy,” he seemed to say.
Coco, ever the cautious one, nudged his brother’s cheek with a tiny paw. “Shh… keep it down,” he whispered.
Nina had reminded them to stay quiet, and Chubby was doing his best to chew as silently as possible.
Jason caught sight of the carrier in the rearview mirror and raised an eyebrow. “What’s in that thing?”
“My assistants,” Nina replied quickly, a hint of amusement in her voice. “Two little squirrels. They heard I was going to Pinehill Manor, and the name made them think there’d be plenty of pine trees and pinecones. So, they insisted on coming along.”
Jason chuckled softly. “Don’t worry, they seem well-behaved.”
Nina nodded. “They really are.”
Jason waved a hand dismissively. “Honestly, it’s fine. You saved my life. Forget squirrels—if you wanted to bring a pig in my Ferrari, I wouldn’t care.”
Nina laughed, feeling warmth spread through her chest. “That’s very generous of you.”
Pinehill Manor loomed atop a mountain on the outskirts of the city, surrounded by dense forests. Once the car left the smooth highway and hit the winding mountain road, the ride grew rougher. Jason handled the straight stretches with ease, but when the road curved sharply, he pressed the accelerator harder, making the car speed up.
Nina’s stomach churned with every twist and turn. The nausea crept in slowly but steadily.
Finally, when the sprawling mansion came into view, Nina tapped on the car door. “Stop. Let me out—I need to walk for a bit.”
Jason glanced at her pale face, concern flashing in his eyes. He slammed on the brakes without hesitation. “Jesus!”
Nina stumbled out of the car, clutching the squirrel carrier tightly against her chest, her legs shaky but determined.
Jason slowed to a walk beside her, ready to offer support, but his phone rang abruptly, breaking the moment.
A stern, middle-aged man’s voice barked through the speaker. “Jason, where are you? Get over here—now.”
Jason shot a worried look at Nina.
She waved him off with a small smile. “Go ahead. I’ll be fine on my own. With these little guys around, I’ll probably get to know this place better than you ever will.”
Jason hesitated but nodded reluctantly. “Be careful. When you get inside, stay in the main hall. Don’t wander off.”
