The Fake Heiress and Her Purrfect Partner novel Chapter 5

Chapter 5

By the time Alex and Grant arrived at the scene, Felix was already secured inside the police cruiser. The officers present wasted no time introducing everyone. “Captain Cole, Professor Summer, this is Nina Summer from Apartment 203, and her brother, Simon,” one of them explained.

Alex froze the moment his eyes landed on Nina. “Nina… is that really you?” he blurted out, disbelief etched across his face.

In an instant, the pieces fell into place in his mind. “So the tip about Felix was genuine… No way…” His complexion paled as the staggering coincidence sank in, leaving him momentarily speechless.

Nina was calmly giving her statement when she caught sight of Alex standing near the doorway. She appeared completely unfazed, as if she had been expecting him all along.

The officers exchanged subtle glances, sensing an unspoken connection between the two. Given that they shared the same last name, it was a reasonable assumption that Nina and Alex were related.

Grant turned to Alex with a curious look. “Professor Summer, do you know Nina?”

Alex, who served as the police department’s special consultant, had never mentioned having a sister before. His expression darkened slightly as he nodded. “She was switched at birth with my biological sister and lived with my family for twenty-two years.”

The atmosphere in the room grew thick with tension, as if a dramatic revelation was about to unfold. Everyone wore expressions that hinted at a brewing storm of secrets ready to spill.

Before Nina could utter a word, Simon suddenly stormed over and grabbed Alex by the collar. “Why did you try to stop Nina from calling the police?” he demanded fiercely.

Simon’s fists were clenched so tightly that the veins on his arms stood out prominently. He was clearly struggling to keep his temper in check. Had the situation been different, Alex might have found himself flat on the floor.

“If I hadn’t shown up when I did, Nina could’ve been killed by Felix!” Simon snapped, his voice sharp and urgent.

Simon moved with lightning speed, dragging Alex forward before he had a chance to respond.

Nina watched Simon step up to defend her and thought to herself, ‘Wow, Simon is seriously badass.’

Grant and the other officers looked stunned. Alex was a national champion in martial arts, yet Simon—just a local beat cop—handled him with ease, as if it were nothing.

They quickly intervened, pulling Simon back. Grant asked firmly, “Simon, what happened here? How exactly did Alex try to stop Nina from contacting the police?”

Nina caught the serious tone in Grant’s voice and swiftly pulled out her phone to back up her claim. “Captain, someone has been watching my apartment for the past few days.”

She paused, glancing at Alex before continuing, “When I took out the trash, I saw his face up close. It looked exactly like Felix. So I called the police. But when Alex got the dispatch, he called me, completely worked up, basically accusing me of lying just to get his attention.”

Grant gave Simon a firm pat on the shoulder. “Your entire town squad shares in this glory as well.”

Nearby, officers from the Jelasburg Police Department Headquarters overheard Grant’s praise and immediately scowled. If Alex had taken Nina’s tip seriously from the start, their whole unit would have received the credit.

They had been tracking Felix for half a year, only for a small-town cop to swoop in and steal the spotlight. All their hard work seemed to vanish, leaving them bitter and directing their resentment squarely at Alex.

Nina beamed with pride as Simon received his praise. Batting her eyes at Grant, she asked playfully, “Captain, your wanted poster says there’s a $200,000 reward for tips. Does any of that come to me?”

Grant chuckled warmly. “Absolutely. Your tip is on record, and you helped catch the guy. That money’s yours. Just be patient—once the paperwork’s processed, the cash should hit your account within a month.”

Since Felix needed to be questioned overnight, the team began to prepare for departure.

Alex was the last to leave Apartment 203. As he passed Nina, he shot her a sharp, cold look. “Even a blind squirrel finds a nut sometimes. Don’t count on your luck holding up again.”

Then his gaze shifted to Simon. “A fugitive, huh? Congrats on the lucky break. But is that something to brag about? No matter how hard you try, you’ll always be something low.”
