The Fake Heiress and Her Purrfect Partner novel Chapter 56

**TITLE: Dreams Rise Again by Braxton**
**CONTENT: Chapter 56**

The air inside the house felt thick, almost stifling, pressing down on Nina as she remained silent, her heart pounding like a drum in her chest. The only sound breaking the stillness was the distant, eerie calls of bats echoing through the speakers, a haunting reminder of the danger lurking nearby.

Nina held her breath, every second stretching into an eternity as she waited, her mind racing with thoughts of what might happen next.

Suddenly, a faint sound emerged from the closet, a noise that was distinctly different from the high-pitched calls of the bats. The sound was subtle yet unmistakable, and it pierced through the tension in the room, clear enough for Stella to hear.

Stella’s body went rigid, her instincts kicking in. *[Dr. Summer, I think I just heard the closet door open.]*

She pressed her phone tightly against her chest, the pressure causing a sharp pang of discomfort, yet she couldn’t bring herself to loosen her grip.

From the dimly lit hallway, slow, deliberate footsteps echoed ominously, amplifying the dread that enveloped the room. A figure emerged from the shadows, a man hunched over, his pale neck visible beneath a dark cap that obscured most of his face.

As he stepped into the light, Stella caught a glimpse of his features—rough, weathered skin lined with deep creases, and eyes that darted around anxiously, clouded and unpredictable.

Then, without warning, Brian Carter broke into a grin, revealing yellowed teeth that glinted in the light. His voice, raspy and low, sent chills down Stella’s spine. “Stella, it’s time to dance.”

“Stay back!” Stella shouted, instinctively crouching by the window, feeling the cold glass against her back. Her heart raced, and she could hear the tremor in her voice. “I’ve called the police!”

Nina, listening intently to the chaos unfolding, quickly typed a message to Simon, her fingers flying over the screen. *[Hurry. He’s out. He’s going to hurt her.]*

Brian’s grip tightened around a knife, a sinister sneer spreading across his face. “Really? Well, I’m sure you won’t last long enough for them to arrive.”

He fiddled with his phone in the other hand, displaying a video of Stella’s latest performance. It was clear—Brian was not just a fan; he was an obsessed stalker, someone who had delved into every aspect of her life, crossing boundaries that should never be crossed.

“Stella, why aren’t you playing any music?” His grin widened, a grotesque expression that made her skin crawl. His gaze lingered on her workout clothes, and then he turned serious, his voice dripping with disdain. “You look terrible in that outfit.”

“There are so many nice clothes in your closet,” he continued, stepping closer, invading her space. “Come here, I’ll put you in something beautiful.”

Just as he reached out to grab her, the sound of flapping wings erupted from outside. In an instant, a swarm of bats burst through the window, filling the room with a cacophony of noise.

The flapping wings created a chaotic buzzing, reminiscent of a hundred pages being shaken at once. The high-pitched din pierced through the air, overwhelming the senses, like a relentless ringing in their ears.

But it wasn’t too late. Nina finally found her voice, shouting urgently, “Stella, Snowball, cover your ears!”

Without thinking, Stella instinctively reached out to cover Snowball’s furry ears, feeling the warmth of his small body against her hands. At that moment, she felt a gentle pressure as Snowball, standing on his hind legs, used his front paws to shield her ears, a small but brave gesture.

Tears began to stream down Stella’s cheeks as she clutched the trembling yet protective Snowball, burying her face in his soft fur, seeking solace amidst the chaos.

The officers blinked in astonishment. “Who called the police? Do we need extra support?” one of them asked, still trying to comprehend the situation.

“I had a friend call you,” Stella replied, trembling as she held Snowball tightly, feeling the warmth of his little body against her. “This man was hiding in my closet and even tampered with my door lock.”

Hearing the commotion, Nina quickly spoke to Phantom, urgency in her voice. “Get your friends off him. The cops are here.”

Phantom squeaked through the phone, “Guys, pull back. Thanks for helping out.”

“Thank you all!” Nina shouted into the mic, her voice filled with gratitude. “If you ever need help, come to Forest Isle Zoo anytime.”

At her command, the bats folded their wings in unison, preparing to depart.

“No problem,” the largest bat responded, leaping into the air, flipping gracefully as its wings spread wide like a dark cape. It circled beneath the moonlight before vanishing into the night, leaving only a few feathers drifting down.

The officers stood in stunned silence as they watched the bats elegantly fly away, their expressions a mix of disbelief and awe. “Holy crap. Did I just see Batman? How on earth did she do that?” one officer muttered, shaking his head in disbelief.

As the two officers handcuffed Brian, their faces still frozen in shock, Stella suddenly remembered something crucial. She turned to Nina, her voice urgent. “Dr. Summer, can you ask Snowball when and how this guy got in?”
