He continuously poured drinks for his brother-in-law, and the two of them chatted about business and politics.
Halfway through the dinner, noticing that her mother had barely touched her food, Marilyn asked thoughtfully, "Mom, is the food not to your liking?"
Before Lianne could answer,
Marilyn immediately snapped her head around and ordered Queenie in a commanding tone, "Go to the kitchen and make something Mom actually wants to eat."
"I don't know how."
"Queenie, what is that supposed to mean? You always used to cook. Now suddenly you don't know how? Who do you think you are? Do you really think you married into the Calvert family just to sit around and be served?"
Marilyn had been holding in her anger all evening. She slammed her hand on the table and stood up in fury.
Zander was feeling annoyed too, but he had just managed to coax Queenie into coming back. If he escalated the conflict now and ruined the night, it would be a huge headache.
So, he held his tongue.
While Renata was secretly gloating over the drama, she suddenly felt someone gently step on her foot.
Instinctively looking up, she met a pair of burning eyes. Panicking, she quickly lowered her head.
A rush of memories flooded her mind.
Completely flustered, she sprang out of her chair. "Marilyn, don't be angry. I'll go make something for Mrs. Calvert. It's a holiday, let's keep the peace."
Without another word, Renata quickly left the dining table.
Marilyn sat back down and smacked the table again. "Look at that, just look! You're both women, yet the difference is like night and day. Zander, this is all your..."
"Enough! Can we just eat in peace?"
Zander impatiently snapped at her.
Renata had only volunteered for kitchen duty in a moment of panic because of that foot tap.
But the moment she stepped into the kitchen, she was completely dumbfounded.
She didn't know the first thing about cooking!
But she had already made her grand gesture. If she couldn't produce anything, wouldn't she be slapping herself in the face?
