Dinner at the Xylon house was typically eaten in total silence.
But tonight, the atmosphere was suffocatingly tense.
Queenie sat between her mother and Zander, her mind heavy with exhaustion.
Zander, meanwhile, was desperately searching for an opening to drop his fabricated bombshell. Just as he was trying to figure out how to transition into it...
Willa smiled from across the table. "Speaking of which, Queenie, you and Zander have been married for three years now. Why haven't we heard any news about a baby? Are you two planning to go child-free?"
"Preposterous!"
Desmond slammed his palm against the table, his eyes blazing. "If you didn't want children, why bother getting married? Only unhinged, overly westernized fools think like that!"
The family knew about Zander's car crash years ago, but they had absolutely no idea that it had left him with severe erectile dysfunction.
To protect his ego, Queenie had never breathed a word of it to anyone.
But this was exactly the opening Zander needed.
He immediately pasted on a look of profound sorrow. "To be completely honest, Willa, I've been keeping a secret from all of you. That accident injured my lower back. I've been seeking medical treatment for years, but... I haven't been able to give Queenie a child. She's suffered a great deal being married to me."
The words dropped like a bomb.
The dining room plunged into a dead, horrifying silence.
He hadn't explicitly spelled it out.
But everyone understood exactly what he meant.
Helen was reeling. Was this why she wants a divorce?
Queenie, however, was staring at him in sheer bewilderment. Zander was the most ego-driven man she knew. Why on earth would he willingly expose his deepest, most humiliating secret to her hyper-critical family?
What was he playing at?
This made zero sense!
