The car pulled up to the Calvert villa. Perhaps hearing the engine...
Renata and her daughter rushed out the front door, their faces beaming with eager smiles.
At that moment, she hadn't realized Queenie was in the passenger seat.
Zander stepped out of the car. Romy skipped toward him happily. "Daddy!"
On the other side, the passenger door swung open, and Queenie stepped out into the driveway.
Both mother and daughter froze, shocked to see her back.
Before Renata could even register what was happening...
Queenie marched right up to her and cracked a blistering slap across her cheek.
"Did you enjoy swapping my grandfather's birthday gift?"
Seeing her mother get struck, Romy morphed into a vicious little animal. She lunged at Queenie with feral aggression. "You evil witch! You hit my mommy! I'm going to bite you!"
She threw her arms around Queenie's leg and clamped her teeth down.
In a flash, Zander grabbed the girl by the collar and yanked her back. "Romy, stop acting like a lunatic!" he roared.
The sheer hostility in his voice stunned everyone. Not just Renata and Romy, but Queenie too.
Zander actually reprimanded his precious little angel...
Well, that was a first!
Romy, completely bewildered that her beloved "daddy" had yelled at her for this woman, instantly deployed her ultimate weapon. Tears spilled down her cheeks. "Daddy..."
"Call me Mr. Calvert from now on. I am not your father. Don't ever call me that again."
Queenie stared at him in utter disbelief.
Was he actually possessed?
Renata forgot all about the stinging in her cheek. She stared at Zander, her mind reeling with shock and fury.
Her entire body trembled.
Why?
How could he leave for a birthday dinner and return a completely different person?
