Zenia was Queenie's best friend and a senior magazine editor. Because of her work, she had temporarily been transferred to an overseas branch for six months.
"I came back for a quick meeting, but I'm flying out tomorrow morning. Are you free tonight? Let's catch up."
Zenia already knew that Queenie had been cheated on. Even with her insane schedule, she still wanted to carve out time to comfort and be there for her best friend.
"Sure, let's meet at the usual spot."
Queenie hadn't seen Zenia in two months, and she really missed her.
At seven o'clock sharp, Queenie arrived at Echoes Bar. This was the spot she and Zenia used to frequent all the time. Both of them loved the Mojitos here. The taste was smooth and sweet, with endlessly layered, lingering flavors beneath the foam.
Queenie walked into a private booth and ordered two Mojitos. She pulled out her phone and texted Zenia: *I'm here, how much longer are you going to be?*
She then sipped her drink while waiting for a reply.
However, by the time she finished her entire Mojito, Zenia still hadn't texted back. Feeling a bit confused, she simply called her.
The line rang for quite a while before Zenia finally picked up. She lowered her voice to a whisper. "Babe, I'm in a meeting, I'm so, so sorry. Our editor-in-chief has lost his damn mind. He's suddenly forcing me to fly back to the overseas branch tonight. I have no idea what went wrong over there, but I can't make it. Let's catch up next time."
Queenie let out a breath. "It's okay, let's just do it next time. You weren't replying, so I thought something had happened to you."
Zenia felt incredibly guilty. When Queenie was going through her hardest moment, she couldn't even be there for her.
Her silence was all Queenie needed to know what she was thinking.
"Alright, I'm fine. You focus on your work, don't let your boss yell at you again."
Queenie hung up and ended up drinking Zenia's Mojito as well. Even though cocktails weren't overly strong, two drinks on an empty stomach still left her feeling a little lightheaded.
