"Okay, okay."
Miles nodded repeatedly.
Best not to mention it.
He had been worried his boss wouldn't be able to get over it anytime soon.
But he let it go so cleanly.
It seemed their boss had a pretty strong moral compass after all!
On the other side of the room, Queenie had hidden in a corner to find some peace and quiet.
God knows how panicked she had felt seeing the man from last night.
Fortunately, she had explained what needed explaining, and he didn't seem to want to dig any deeper.
Her anxious heart finally settled.
Just then, a malicious-looking woman walked toward her, holding a glass of red wine.
A faint hint of jealousy swirled in her eyes.
It was the same socialite Stanley had cursed out earlier.
After Stanley told her to get lost, she hadn't left immediately; instead, she hid nearby to secretly watch him.
Who would have thought she'd see him tangled up with this woman.
He even grabbed her arm.
In what way was she inferior to this nobody?
When the socialite reached Queenie, she stared at her extremely simple evening gown.
It was so ordinary it looked like a draped rag. Mockery surfaced in her eyes. "Miss, what brand is this dress?"
She feigned curiosity from a condescending height. "I don't think I've ever seen this style."
Queenie looked up and smiled. "It's a niche designer piece. You probably haven't heard of it."
"Oh, it does look pretty cheap. Wearing such cheap clothes to an important event like this... people might think you're strolling through a farmers' market..."
The woman covered her mouth and sneered.
Queenie caught on immediately; this woman was clearly looking for a fight.
She was just wondering when she had offended her.
When a sarcastic voice sounded from above, "This gown is a custom piece from Atelier Jacques. They don't do ready-to-wear, only private commissions, and the waitlist is at least six months long."
Queenie looked toward the voice and saw a young woman of about twenty-three or twenty-four.
She was wearing a dark green velvet mini dress with no jewelry on her neck, just a delicate pair of pearl earrings.
Her features weren't breathtakingly beautiful, but they were very charming.
Her brows were soft, and her eyes, though not large, were incredibly bright. When she smiled, her lips curved into a beautiful arc.
"It's not that you can't appreciate it, it's that you genuinely don't know quality when you see it. The client list for Atelier Jacques is mostly royalty, and you call their clothes cheap? Pfft..."
Jocelyn Jennings pursed her lips and giggled. "I think the only thing cheap here is your pretentious eyes, pretending to know things you don't."
