“Yeah, I’m the executive assistant to the CEO of Aurélle.”
Hearing that she worked directly for the top brass of the host company, Queenie Xylon was stunned. A wave of hesitation washed over her.
She wondered if she should keep her distance from Jocelyn Jennings.
After all, she was going to be a contestant. She didn't want anyone suspecting her of bribery or foul play.
Perhaps reading her expression, Jocelyn quickly reassured her. “Queenie, don't worry. Your registration for the competition has nothing to do with me. Even as the CEO's assistant, I have zero authority to give anyone a free pass. No one in the entire Aurélle management team does, except the CEO himself.
And knowing him, he strictly separates business from his personal life. Even if you were his best friend, he'd never give you an unfair advantage.”
At that moment, Queenie still had no idea who the CEO of Aurélle was.
Even though Zander Calvert had dragged her around to network last night, he had introduced her to so many people that they were all a blur.
Zander had never formally introduced the man to her anyway.
“Honestly, I probably shouldn't overthink it. I'll likely just be participating for the experience.”
Seeing the sudden disappointment in Queenie's eyes, Jocelyn asked with concern, “What's wrong?”
Without hiding anything, Queenie admitted that she was missing a crucial raw ingredient for her formula.
Because she couldn't find a suitable replacement, she felt she was already out of the running for the championship.
Naturally, she omitted the real reason behind her black rose being destroyed in the fire.
“Oh, I see. Can't you just substitute it with another floral note?”
“It just won't produce the exact scent I’m aiming for. I feel like my chances of winning are slim to none. Maybe it's just fate telling me I need a little more grinding before I can hit the road to success…”
Queenie let out a heavy sigh, then forced a genuine smile. “But it's fine. Even if the odds are against me, I'm going to give it everything I have. If I go down, I'll go down fighting!”
“That's the spirit! I believe in you. You're going to crush it!”
“Thanks for the vote of confidence. By the way, do you have plans later? If not, let me treat you to dinner.”
