Arriving at the door of the holding cell, she looked inside.
If she hadn't seen it with her own eyes, Queenie never would have believed that the person huddled next to Zander was actually Renata!
Even seeing it with her own eyes, she still couldn't believe it.
Only a day had passed, and Zander had gotten into a physical altercation and thrown into a cell for a woman who had nearly ruined him.
Queenie stood frozen in place, a suffocating ache spreading through her chest.
That pain wasn't born out of any lingering attachment to Zander, but out of hatred—hatred for herself, for being so blind back then to end up with a piece of trash like him.
Her blindness back then was exactly the same as Zander's blindness right now.
The difference was—
He was reveling in it.
She was steeped in regret.
Heh, what a shocking joke. She had already dragged him into a swamp of his own making, and yet he was still standing guard like a fiercely loyal lapdog.
It seemed whatever little brain Zander had left had been completely corroded by Renata.
On the bench in the holding cell, the man and woman sat shoulder to shoulder. The man seemed to be asleep, resting his head on the woman's shoulder.
The woman was gazing deeply at him.
Sensing someone watching her, Renata looked up and met Queenie's glacial stare.
A provocative smile curled her lips as she carefully leaned Zander against the wall.
She walked over.
Stopping in front of Queenie, Renata raised an eyebrow. "Queenie, I'm so sorry for making you come all the way down here in the middle of the night to clean up our mess.
The thing is, it wasn't convenient for me to call anyone else. I was afraid you'd be embarrassed if I told the police you were his wife, so I lied and said you were his sister. I was trying to save you some face."
Renata chuckled softly, tucking a stray lock of hair behind her ear. "Zander is just too much. That guy just wanted my number, and he wouldn't allow it. He beat the guy half to death.
But going through this made me realize something. He might be able to lose the whole world, but he absolutely cannot lose me."
Queenie's nails dug into her palms.
