Everyone in that room who had just been running their mouths about her behind her back—she wasn't going to let a single one of them off the hook.
Feigning complete ignorance, she flashed a bright, plastic smile. "Hi everyone! Sorry to keep you waiting."
The group mirrored her fake enthusiasm. "Oh, no problem at all!"
She took the seat next to Zander. He immediately frowned, staring at her outfit. It was the same one she had worn that morning.
She knew they were meeting his peers, yet she hadn't bothered to change.
It had actually been cleaner this morning. Now, it was marked with smudges, oil stains, and carried a potent mix of various floral notes. She looked like an exhausted housewife fresh from a frantic grocery run.
Anger flared in his chest.
She had absolutely no regard for his reputation.
She had been working hard at the atelier all afternoon, but realistically, she could have found five minutes to change.
But why would she dress up to make him look good?
A woman dresses for the one who appreciates her.
Did a piece of garbage like him deserve that effort? Was he worth it?
As far as she was concerned, just showing up tonight was giving him far more respect than he deserved.
Noticing a mother seated nearby holding a baby, she immediately broke into a delighted grin and reached over to hold the infant.
Cradling the child with exaggerated affection, she projected her voice across the room. "Zander, look how adorable this baby is! Make sure you keep taking your medication on time so we can have one soon too."
The lively chatter abruptly died. The atmosphere in the room turned instantly bizarre.
Medication... to have a baby?
What did that mean? Was she loudly implying that the great CEO was impotent?
Feeling the sudden, incredibly awkward stares from the entire table, Zander nearly exploded. He had literally told her that morning to watch her mouth.
Was she just an idiot, or was she doing this on purpose?
