Chapter 255
JCA-
We were in Monza.
After Monaco, after Barcelona, Italy felt good.
TO VOULE
Home crowd. Family name on the banners. All I could think about was Charlotte and the proposal I had been planning. It was not going to be small. I had already messed things up so badly in the past. I planned on spending the rest of my life making it up to her.
First I had to finish the race.
Then I had everything planned for her.
She did the checks the way she always did. Belts. Gloves. The little tug on the HANS that meant she was pretending she was not scared. Ever since the crash she’s been extra nervous whenever I race.
I leaned in.
“Kiss me.”
She went pink immediately. “Luca, everyone is ”
I kissed her before she could finish. Not a peck. I kissed her like I was starving, which I usually was for her. Then I kissed her cheek, softer, right where she was still blushing.
“For luck,” I said.
“You don’t need luck. Just do not lose focus this time. I do not want any crashes.”
“Is it just me or have you gotten bossier since we got together?”
“I’m trying to keep you alive,” she said, and stepped back so I could get in.
I waved once I was strapped. At her. Only at her.
Then the race started.
It went well. Home crowd roaring every time my car went past the grandstand. Marco and I had been trading fastest laps, the commentators eating it alive. By the second to last lap I was right behind him.
I smiled inside the helmet. I could pass him soon and he knew it. He always knew when I was too close. We had done this countless times. He was defending. I was hunting. It was fun. And now that I had Charlotte, everything in my life felt better than before.
Then the last thing I ever expected happened today.
My brother hit the kerb wrong.
The painted red and white ridge on the inside of the corner. Drivers use it. Sometimes they ride it. Hit it at the wrong angle, with the wrong speed, and the car does not stay planted.

The rear stepped. The car pitched. For a second it was airborne and my whole body froze. I saw the underside. The wheels off the ground. Then it came down on its side, dug in, and started to tumble.
Once.
Twice.
Pieces flew. A front wing. Something that used to be a wheel skipping across the asphalt in front of me like
it had been thrown.
I braked so hard the belts cut into my shoulders.
I saw the yellow flags. Then red. Everyone else would lose their minds that I was stopping. I was already too close to the wreck to think about anyone else.
My brother’s car was on its roof in the ground, wheels still spinning, smoke starting from somewhere it should not.
My radio screamed my name.
I did not answer.
I pulled the car off the racing line, half on the grass, killed the engine, and tore at the harness with hands that did not feel like mine.
I had the six-point belts off faster than I had ever managed in a pit stop.
A marshal shouted. I was already out. Against every rule. Against every fine they would throw at me. I did not care if they banned me for a year.
