Chapter 267

~MARCO~

My mother did not give the album back.

“You have done it,” she said. Her voice had gone soft. “Truly done it.”

“I am married,” I said. “That’s what I came to tell you. It isn’t the end of the world, mother.”

“You got married.” She laughed once, sharp, and looked at the picture again as if it might change.

Caterina was behind her, silent now, the reunion finished.

“You think I’m in shock because you got married? While that is partly true. There is a more serious matter at hand. One that I’m surprised you do not already know. Which makes me wonder how much you even know about the woman you married.”

She turned the page. Another frame. Loretta’s hand in mine. The roses. My mother’s face tightened until I thought she might tear the print.

“The entire family will go mad,” she said. “Your father. Your grandfather. The people who still refuse a Bellandi bottle in a Vescari room. Do you understand what you have brought to this door? Have you not been paying attention at all? To this house? To your own name?”

I stiffened at her tone. There was something in her voice that suggested the wedding wasn’t the only issue upsetting her. It felt like I had done something else that made the entire situation even worse, turning it into more than just an unwanted marriage.

“What are you talking about?”

She lifted the album so I had to see the face I had married.

“How much research did you do on this woman that you married without consulting with your entire family first?” she demanded.

Research? Why would I bother looking into Loretta? She hadn’t done anything suspicious enough to warrant a background check before we went ahead with the contract marriage. Still, my mother acted like I’d really screwed up.

“I love her.” I lied. “Why would I run any searches on the woman I’m in love with?”

She laughed but there was no humor there. She was acting strange and it was starting to freak me out.

Then she threw her hands up into the air.

“You married a Bellandi. A Bellandi, Marco. This family’s greatest enemy. How could you? What the hell were you thinking?”

I froze.

A Bellandi?

I knew the Bellandi family. Well, I knew the stories about them. Everyone in this house knew it.

I had never asked Loretta for her last name, didn’t think it important. I’d just needed someone who didn’t like me to enter the contract marriage. I never thought I’d choose a woman attached to a family that my entire family has hated for decades.

“Are you sure?”

“Of course I’m sure.” Her eyes were bright with fury. “I know that face. I would know that face anywhere. She looks just like her mother. I cannot stand that woman and now my son has betrayed the entire family by marrying her daughter!”

Caterina looked entertained by all of this. I tried not to pay any attention to her.

My mother’s eyes widened, like she’d suddenly remembered something that was important.

“Was that why Loretta was at the hospita’

She did know her. She knew her name. She’d clearly ran into her at the hospital. So they both knew each other

already.

It turns out my surprise for my mother caught me off guard more than it did her.

“Um,” I said as I rubbed the back of my head. “Yes. She did come to the hospital when she learned about my

accident.”
