Chapter 268
~LORETTA~
“Show me.” My mother repeated. “Let me see the proof that you are now married.”
Rico knocked a second time. She did not turn. I opened the bag, found the copy Giovanni had taken before I could drop it, and put it in her hand.
My fingers were a bit shaky, and I hated that she could see it. I really didn’t want to show how nervous I was. I’ d never done anything this rebellious before, and I knew my family wouldn’t take kindly to my actions like they had with other things I’d tried in the past.
She read through it the second I pulled it out and gave it to her. I’d never seen her read anything that quickly before.
I watched her eyes move. The date. The clerk’s stamp. My signature, uneven at the end.
She made a small sound at the witness lines-Giovanni’s name. Now I was worried about him. I would not let them bully him for helping me out. And since I would be staying with Marco from now on, maybe Giovanni could stay there as well.
Then she went still.
The page trembled because her hand did.
“Have you lost your mind, girl?”
It came out as a shout. My mother did not shout. Not when important guests were in the next room and could hear everything.
“I know you’re upset about the marriage-”
“It is not just the marriage.” She snapped. The paper shook between us. “Loretta, do you even know who you are married to?”
“What are you talking about? Of course I know who I married. Marco. The famous F1 driver. He was recently in an accident-”
“Look.” She turned it toward me, one finger pressed under the line. “Read the name of the man you married. His full name. Tell me if you see anything wrong with it. Tell me you are not this careless.”
I looked. Again. Since she insisted.
I had signed beside it. I had not read it. At the registry I had watched the pen, the clerk’s hand, Giovanni’s coat, anything but the line above mine.
The letters were clear now. Printed, then signed in a slant.
Marco Vescari.
I froze.
Vescari?
I mean surely this didn’t have to be the same Vescari my family had a problem with. There were more than one family with the same last name.
Then I remembered running into Francesca Vescari in the hospital while I was visiting Marco after his crash. She’d said my son is on this floor.
My son.
I had not asked which son. I had not questioned anything. We were supposed to keep our distance from that family, that’s why I didn’t bother having a conversation with her.
Marco Vescari.
I could feel my heart racing uncontrollably

Surely this was not happening to me. Out of all the Italian men in this country, how could I have gotten caught up with a Vescari?
“No-” I said.
My mother laughed even though there truly wasn’t anything funny about this entire situation.
“Yes my lovely daughter, you married a Vescari. Francesca and Massimo’s son. The famous F1 driver. The one on the news with the broken wrist. You married him today, and you brought the proof into my study while Rico’ s mother is sitting on my sofa.”
The room shifted. I put a hand on the desk. I suddenly felt dizzy, like my entire world was spinning.
“I didn’t know.”
“You didn’t know.” She repeated it while glaring at me. “You put your name under his and you did not know. Do you understand what you have done to this house? Your father will see this. The family will see this. A Bellandi signature next to a Vescari signature is not a scandal we can call a simple misunderstanding. You are married to a Vescari, this means your last name is now the enemy’s last name.”
This was not good. I felt like I was about to faint.
