The track did not look like the races I had seen on a screen. The hills sat behind the fence.
Marco nodded at a car under the awning. Two seats, one behind the other, the rear one a little higher.
“That one,” he said. “Two-seater. Private session. You can still back out.”
“I’m not backing out.”
“You don’t look like the type of girl who will enjoy being in a race car.”
I rolled my eyes. “What kind of girl do I look like?”
He smirked, and the sunlight on his face made him look even more ridiculously handsome. I hated myself for even noticing.
“The kind that locks herself in a kitchen all day. Eating.”
Would he bring up my love for food every chance that he got?
“You know nothing.” I glared at him. “I’m sure I could race better than you if I actually wanted to.”
“On a bicycle, maybe.”
I flipped him the finger.
“On this. If I wanted.”
He looked amused. Then the amusement went, and that serious expression took over. “Like you said. I’m only using one hand. If I make a mistake out there, I don’t want you behind me for the lesson.”
“The safest thing would be for you not to do this right now.”
“I live for this.” He said it simply, which made it harder to fight. “I can’t go a month without it. This is all I have right now.”
I sighed. It didn’t look like I could talk him out of this.
“Then let’s get in.”
They put a helmet on me. Someone buckled the harness until I realized what I was actually getting myself involved in right now.
I needed to constantly remind myself that my contract husband knew what he was doing. He’d done this hundreds of times and was actually good at it from all the stalking I’d done recently to get to know him better.
Marco got in front. I could see the back of his neck. The engine started.

Deep breaths. It’s going to be okay.

“I’m about to start,” he said, in my ear through the speaker, too calm. “If you feel sick, warn me. Don’t be brave. I’ll find a way to stop instantly.”
“I’m fine. You’re worrying for no reason.”
I held my breath when I felt it starting to move. Oh my goodness, I’m actually going through with this right
now.
I had thought it would be similar to him racing towards his house last night. This was not that. This was the world yanked out from under the harness. The wind found every gap in the suit.
I made a noise I hoped the radio did not pick up. He did not laugh. He shifted, one-handed, smoother than he had any right to be, and the noise climbed.
A corner arrived and the car turned harder than a car should turn. My head tried to stay behind. The belt held. I understood, in one stupid flash, why he could not give it up for a month.
Nothing could possibly feel similar to this. And this wasn’t even the real thing.
The fence blurred. We were not at the speed he wanted. I knew that without being told. The two-seater was heavier. He was being safe because of his wrist and, whether he admitted it or not, the girl behind him—me. It was still faster than anything I had ever experienced.
Second corner. I forgot to breathe. The force pushed me into the seat until my body hurt.
Tears came up from the wind and stayed in my lashes. I was grinning. I was also close to crying. I was also sure I was going to die, and these facts sat side by side without agreeing.
The engine note dropped, rose, dropped. I wasn’t sure what I could even grip onto inside of here.
“Still with me?” he asked.
