Chapter 279
MARCO-
Her weight hit my arm and my eyes went wide before the rest of me caught up.
“Fuck!”

She had been nodding. Confirmed she was okay. But she’d clearly lied to me. I got the other/arm around, her before her knees completely gave out.
My wrist complained. I used it anyway. Her head fell against my shoulder.
“Medic!” I shouted toward the garage. “Now. She fainted. Move!”
They came running. Two of them, the private-session pair who usually spent the morning bored. A stretcher board between them. Hands out. One of them reached for her shoulder.
“We’ve got her.”
“No.” I turned so they could not take her from me. “I’ll carry her. You walk with me. She’s breathing. She didn’t hit the ground. Don’t put her on that until we’re inside.”
“Signore, your wrist has still not healed; if you drop her-”
“I won’t drop her.”
I got an arm under her knees and one across her back. I carried her into the shade of the garage and set her on the table.
Someone folded a jacket under her ankles. Someone else had already got the helmet off. Her hair was stuck to her temple.
Damn it. How could I have let this happen?
“Pulse is there,” the medic said. “Strong enough. We’ll check the pressure. Give us room.”
I gave them an arm’s length and no more. I did not take my eyes off her.
She was responsive to pain. Pupils fine. Then a cold pack was placed on the neck.
I wasn’t supposed to let her come with me. Why the fuck did I let her talk me into it?
She had stood against the door, refusing to let me go and I had been amused, and then Luca had called, and bringing her had been the easier escape than leaving her there to deal with my family alone.
That was still not a reason to put a girl like her in a race car.
She had insisted. Insisted did not excuse anything. I was the one with the experience enough to know a girl like her shouldn’t be out there with me.
“Come on,” I said. “Open your eyes.”

She did. Like she’d heard me.

Not all at once, A flutter, a frown. Her gaze found the ceiling, the medic, then me. I was already closer than the arm’s length.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m-” She swallowed. “Did I
“You fainted. Don’t sit up yet.”
She sat up. Of course she did. The medic sighed and let her, one hand hovering.
She looked at my wrist, then at my face, and had the nerve to look guilty.
“I’m fine,” she said.
“You’re never doing that again.”
They cleared her to leave if she drank the water they gave her. She did.
