Chapter 282

ORETTA-

I went to the window. I needed to know who the guest was.

I held my breath when I saw her. A girl I’d never seen before.

She was beautiful. Long legs, pretty hair, expensive clothes. Probably designer.

She looked like a model. The kind of beautiful that belonged next to a man like Marco and knew it.

She was talking with her whole body, one hand lifted, then the other, reaching for his arm, the front of his shirt. Each time he moved. A step back. A turn of the shoulder. He didn’t do it cruelly. He did it like a man who had already said no and was tired of saying it again. Even from the upstairs window I could tell he was upset with her. She looked miserable about it.

Who was she?

He had never mentioned a girlfriend. Not once. If he had a girlfriend, I didn’t see why he needed me.

Unless this entire thing was to make her jealous.

Maybe it had never been about his mother forcing him into a marriage with a random woman. Maybe it had always been about her.

She knew him well. I could tell from her behavior.

He wanted her gone. I could see that from here.

Jealousy entered my body without warning. It irritated me more than the woman did.

Why was I jealous? He was not mine. He had never been mine. In a year the papers would end this and we would go back to being two people who shared a last name for a while and nothing else. Pretend. That was the word we had both used.

She reached for him again. He caught her wrist this time, brief, and let it go.

She didn’t leave.

That irritated me more than the jealousy. If she knew he was married, and he must have told her, then what was she doing on his property trying to put her hands on him?

Unless he hadn’t told her.

I didn’t know what I was doing. I knew I had been told to stay upstairs. I also knew I was already moving, one hand on the rail because the morning’s dizziness had not entirely left me and I refused to give him another fainting episode to throw in my face.

By the time I reached the bottom stair he was in the hall.

The front door was shut. His eyes were closed, head tipped back against the wall, as if the visit had wrung him out.

hat was that about?” I asked.

“Nothing important.”

Nothing important. She had tried to touch him more than once. He had looked exhausted by it, and I was supposed to believe that was nothing.

“Who was that guest?”

“You don’t have to worry about that.” He straightened. The tiredness didn’t leave his face.

“You were supposed to stay upstairs.”

“I did. I could see everything from the window.”
