Chapter 283

-MARCO-

I stood in the hall after she went up and listened to the door shut.

“Fuck.”

I walked back to the kitchen and slammed my fist against the door.

Damn it.

Pain shot up the wrist I was supposed to be protecting. I did it again anyway.

“Shit.”

I had been an ass. A complete asshole.

She had come down worried, and I had treated her poorly.

I hadn’t wanted to talk to her that way, but the second I’d seen Caterina, my whole mood had shifted.

I was not over what she had done. Seeing her try to walk back in like she hadn’t broken my heart years ago, had lit the old anger, and I had turned around and given the heat to the girl who’d been kind enough to help me.

I was even angrier at my mother for giving her this address.

She had set the whole thing up because she did not want me with Loretta. My mother had decided a girl from my past was the solution to her problems.

If she had left it alone, Loretta would not have been involved in my life in any way. I wouldn’t even be in a contract marriage with her. Today just reminded me why I’d gone through all that trouble in the first place.

I opened the fridge. Closed it. Opened it again.

I needed to apologize.

What could I do?

Food.

That always seemed to cheer her up.

I had learned to cook a few years back. I never thought I’d be cooking for anyone but I was willing to do it for her.

I put water to boil. Then got the sauce ready. Low heat. I chopped the ingredients until I felt a little better.

It took more than an hour. She hadn’t come down once in that hour. Keeping her distance like she said she would.

opened on the second knock. The glare followed immediately when she saw that it was me.

Then her eyes dropped to the plate. I waited for the look she got around food, the one that forgot to be angry for a second. It did not come. She stared at the pasta as if it had personally reminded her of my earlier behavior.

“What’s that?”

“I” I scratched the back of my head. The truth was right there. I cooked it. I was sorry. I swallowed the words. “The cook made this for you.”

Why the fuck had I said that?

“I’m not hungry.”

“You? Not hungry?”

“Why do you even care?” She snapped. “Separate lives, remember?”

Fuck.

“I’m sorry-”

“Save it.”

The door shut in my face. Yeah, I definitely deserved that.

I would try again later with the food.

I gave it an hour. I took the stairs slower this time.

Would she still be angry?

The door opened before I touched it.

I frowned when I came face to face with her.

For a moment, all I could do was stop and stare. I wasn’t expecting this. She was dressed up nicely, in one of the shortest dresses to ever exist. Why the fuck did she even own something like this?

She looked like she was leaving, and she looked like she knew exactly what the dress would do to the man in front of her.

My heart started racing.
