Chapter 285

I checked the window again. The driveway was still empty. I had been checking it for forty minutes, which was thirty-nine more than a man with a contract and a clear conscience should have needed.
Pacing did not help. The hall was too short. The kitchen still smelled like the pasta she had refused.
I had reheated it once, stupidly, as if a warm plate could undo what I’d said. It sat on the counter under a cloth. I left it there and went back to the window.
I still did not know who she had gone to meet.
That was the part that felt like a knife through my chest. She had said someone, the same useless word I had thrown at her, and then she had walked out in that dress with Giovanni and no other answer.
I had stood at the bottom of the stairs and let her, because every argument I had ended with the mention of the contract, and she had used the contract like a weapon.
I’d done this. I’d pushed her away, just like I always pushed away any woman that tried getting close to me. I’d done it countless of times but this was the first time it had truly bothered me to the point that I couldn’t think of anything else.
I kept telling myself I was anxious if someone saw her with another man, if a photo got to my mother or hers, the story stopped being a marriage and started being a joke.
The families were already in a room trying to split us up. They didn’t need help from either of us. My mother’s plan was working. She’d sent Caterina here to cause trouble and that’s exactly what she’d done.
But could I truly blame her? This was all my doing. I’d spoken to Loretta harshly when all she wanted was a simple answer. I couldn’t even give her that.
I wanted her back in the house. I wanted the dress to have been for me and not for whoever was sitting across from her right now in some random bar. I should have followed her. I should have stopped her.
I wanted to know the name of the man she’d surely met today so I could hate it properly. I rubbed a hand over my face. Could it be the one she’d mentioned? The one her mother wanted her to marry.
It couldn’t be. She married me to avoid him. Why would she meet up with him? Could it be a lover of hers? I felt sick at even the possibility of that being true.
Headlights flashed on the gate.
I was at the door before the engine cut. Giovanni came around the car and opened the passenger side.
Loretta swung her legs out and missed the ground by an inch. He caught her elbow. She laughed, and swayed left, then right, then left again.
What the fuck?
I was down the steps in seconds. “What’s wrong with her?”

Giovanni kept his voice low, one hand still on her arm. “She drank. More than she meant to, I think. I stayed. She was never out of sight. She asked me not to question it.” A pause. “She is not hurt. Only drunk.”
“Fuck,” I growled.
She blinked at me like I had arrived from another planet.
“I’ve got her,” I told Giovanni. “Thank you. Go in. We’re done for the night.”
He hesitated half a second, then nodded and stepped back.
I bent, got an arm under her knees and one across her back, and lifted. I ignored the pain in my wrist. She made a noise of protest that turned into her forehead against my collarbone.
“Mean,” she mumbled.
