I walked in and Giovanni was already there, standing just inside the door with that flat look that meant she had not left the room and he had not asked a single question. I nodded once. That was all I needed. I had been half afraid she would try to follow me.

I should have gone to one of the guest rooms. Far enough that I couldn’t hear her breathe. I walked into my room instead. I told myself it was because I needed to keep an eye on her. Make sure she was okay after everything.

She was under the sheet where I had left her, turned on her side, one hand curled near her mouth.

The dress was still twisted around her ribs. Her hair was messy across the pillow. I stood at the foot of the bed longer than I meant to.

Looking at her without touching was fucking torture.

I could still taste her. Still hear the broken sound she made when I sucked her nipple into my mouth. Still feel how soft she had been under my hands, how she had arched and pulled me closer instead of pushing

me away.

She looked smaller now. Softer. The line between her brows was gone. She looked like she was having a good sleep.

My hand moved before the rest of me agreed. Fingers against her cheek. Light. The skin was warm. She made a small sound and turned into the touch without waking.

I pulled my hand back like it burned.

I could not get involved with her. I had just left a terrace where her grandfather accused me of playing her and mine accused her family of being liars, and both of them had looked ready to swing canes. Our families hated each other. The contract said no sex. She was drunk. She was a virgin. I had already kissed her on the floor and sucked on her breasts and almost put my mouth between her thighs. That was enough. More than enough.

I lay down on top of the sheet, on my side of the bed, and told myself to keep distance between us. I closed my eyes. I did not remember falling asleep.

When I opened them, I was not alone on my side of the bed.

I felt warmth. Softness. The slow, even breath against the side of my neck. I stayed still and let the pieces settle.

She was on top of me. All of her. Chest to chest, one knee hooked over my hip, face tucked into my neck like she had decided that was the only place she wanted to be.

I did not remember her moving. I would have remembered. Had she slept the entire night like that? On me. Against me. Like she belonged there.

I could smell her. It made me drunk on her.

It went straight through me. My hands stayed where they were, one on the mattress, the other half curled near her hip. I did not touch her. I wanted to. I wanted to drag my palm down her back and pull her closer and bury my face in her hair and breathe her in until I forgot every reason this was a bad idea.

She shifted.

The movement was small. Just enough. My cock answered before the rest of me caught up, hard against the inside of her thigh, against the thin barrier of whatever she still had on. Fuck. I stayed still. She sighed, soft and content, nuzzling once under my jaw like the spot was comfortable. Then she went still again.

They widened. She pushed up on her hands so fast the sheet went with her. She was straddling me. Fully awake now. Dress crooked. Hair a mess. Mouth parted.

I saw the exact second she realized. Her gaze dropped. Color hit her face. She felt me. Hard. Right there. Against her.
