The Hockey Captain’s Unwanted Wife (Blair and Grayson) novel Chapter 292

-LORETTA-

The helicopter took forty minutes.

I had not expected a helicopter. I had expected a car, an argument about seats. Instead Giovanni drove us to a small field behind the estate, the rotors already turning, and Marco handed me a headset like this was a normal way to reach the beach.

The noise was too loud for conversation. I watched the scenery, and tried not to notice the way his thigh stayed a careful inch from mine.

Luca and Charlotte took the seats across from us. Blair and Grayson followed in a second helicopter with Olivia and Roman. Nico decided he would sit this one out since he had to return home earlier than expected.

By the time we set down on a private strip above a cove the Vescari name apparently owned, my stomach had settled but my thoughts had not.

It was a commercial beach club run by the family. Mainly Marco and Luca.

Staff in white shirts moved between the cabanas in front of us. By the time the bags were out and the umbrellas were claimed, we could hear the noise from the other guests.

A man in a white shirt knew Marco’s order without asking. A plate of fruit arrived before we had even sat down. It told me he came here often. Well, why wouldn’t he?

The water was clear enough to see the bottom for the first ten meters, then it went deep and green. It was breathtaking.

I had a black bikini under the oversized white shirt. Simple. I didn’t want to overdo it after what happened last night.

I kept the shirt buttoned to the throat. I kept my arms crossed over it. Every time the wind tried to open the front I caught it and held it closed.

It would not leave me. Thoughts about last night. I had climbed into his lap like I had a right to it.

I had told him he was my first kiss. I had told him other things-stupid, soft, desperate things that made my cheeks burn even now.

He had said get off. More than once. I had not gotten off. Then I had woken up on top of him, both of us shocked, the sheet twisted between our legs.

What was wrong with me?

I was never the type to get drunk and make confessions. Especially not to someone who was supposed to only be my husband on contract.

Especially not to a man who was supposed to be the enemy. Since when did I become the girl who needed someone that badly? Since when did the sound of his voice make my throat close?

Olivia dropped into the chair beside me with two bottles of water and a grin that looked genuine.

“So how did you manage to get a man like Marco to settle down?”

I frowned. “What?”

She smiled. “Marco is known to stay away from women after a bad relationship in the past. He usually keeps his distance and doesn’t let anyone get close to him. We’re surprised he married you that quickly. But also happy. Please don’t mistake my question as some sort of interest in him.”

“Oh,” I whispered. “I was not thinking in that direction. Do not worry. I honestly don’t know what I did to get him to settle.”

I could see she was happily married. Roman watched her how men watch the thing they already know is theirs.

Still, the words made me confused.

He usually stayed away from women.

That would explain why he kept pushing me away last night. Why his hands had stayed careful even when mine had not. Why he had looked at me in the morning like I was a problem.

I wished I could tell her the truth about the contract. But I had to keep my mouth shut.

Blair was already in the water to her waist, hair wet, shouting something at Grayson who looked like he couldn’t wait to join her.
