Twenty minutes of shouting, and a manager who kept apologizing and I still couldn’t get Loretta’s expression out of my mind.
When it was handled I walked back out into the sun.
Luca was waiting at the steps. Arms crossed. Face tight. The look he used when he had already been yelled at for something I’d done and had decided I was going to hear about it.
“What the fuck are you thinking?” he demanded. I could hear the frustration in his voice.
What had I done exactly to get this reaction out of him?
“What?”
“You walked off with Caterina. Loretta saw it. Everyone saw it. Blair, Olivia, and Charlotte. The women didn’t come for you. They came for me. Charlotte looked at me like I had personally invited her. Why the fuck would I ever invite your ex-girlfriend? Blair asked if this was a family habit. I got lectured because you’re suddenly acting like you have options.”
I almost smiled. He caught it.
“Don’t,” he said.
“You do have the experience,” I said. “Maybe they assumed you gave lessons. You have slept around quite a lot. Been around more than one girl at the same time. Just look up your name on the internet and you’ll see=”
“This isn’t funny.” His voice dropped. “I got into trouble because of you. Why are you entertaining her? Are we allowed to say her name now, or is that still banned? Since when do you allow her in the same space as you?”
I exhaled. The cove was bright and loud and full of people who were carefully not looking at us. “I didn’t entertain her. She keeps showing up. Mom is feeding her locations. My house. Beach. Probably the next place I stand still for more than ten minutes. I’ve told her to stay away. She isn’t listening. I don’t even know how mother was able to inform her that we would be at the beach today.”
Luca studied me. The anger eased into something more familiar. “Mom.”
“Mom,” I repeated. “She wants Loretta gone. She is working overtime to make it happen. Caterina is convenient. She still thinks there’s a chance for us. She believes I will leave my marriage for her.”
“And you’re letting her get close enough that Loretta has to watch it. You didn’t see her face out there. I’m actually getting concerned. This was all supposed to be pretend.”
“I pulled her away so Loretta wouldn’t have to watch the rest of it.” The defense sounded weak even to me.” She put her hand on me. I moved her so Loretta wouldn’t have to see her trying to touch me. And I couldn’t exactly draw any attention to us, people were already starting to look.”
Luca was quiet for a second. Then, “have you spoke to Loretta?”
I looked past him toward the cabana. She was still standing where I had left her. Arms crossed. My stomach tightened in a way I did not like. I was not ready to face her. Part of me was still trying to avoid that
conversation.
“I don’t know,” I said. “I haven’t gone over there yet.”
Luca laughed once, short and genuinely amused. “You’re scared.”
“I’m not scared.”
“You’re scared of your contract wife.”
“Shh.” I glanced around. A server passed with a tray. “Don’t say that so loud. Someone will hear you.”
He sighed, “You need to talk to Loretta. Today. Before she decides that this entire thing isn’t worth all the drama. Caterina will keep showing up as long as bor Peppalling her. If you don’t explain it, Loretta is going Successfully unlocked!
