Chapter 297

~LORETTA~

“Loretta.”

I looked up, recognizing that voice instantly.

Enzo.

What was my brother doing here?

He stood a few feet away, hands in his pockets, looking at the beach like he was searching for the best exits.

A Bellandi did not walk onto Vescari sand. Not for a swim. Not for a conversation. He must have been desperate. Or angry. Or both to even consider coming here today.

He crossed the distance in four strides and closed his hand around my arm. Not hard. Firm. “Come with me.”

“Enzo-”

Olivia was already moving. Charlotte right behind her. “Let go of her,” Olivia said. Her voice leaving no room for an argument. “Now.”

“Who is this?” Charlotte asked. She had the book in one hand and the other half-raised, like she was deciding whether to use it.

I bit my lip. The last thing I needed was for my new friends to start beating my brother with a book.

“My brother,” I said quickly.

“I’m guessing one of the family members that doesn’t want you to be with Marco?” Olivia asked me.

I nodded.

Enzo looked irritated. “New friends?”

I smiled, “they are really nice. You should get to know them instead of trying to drag me away.”

“Yes,” Charlotte said. “Get to know her new friends.”

“I’m good. Maybe another time.” He answered her before turning back to me. “Please Loretta, there is something I wish to talk to you about. Privately.”

I sighed and waved at them.

“It’s fine. I’ll go with him.”

Olivia’s eyes narrowed. “You don’t have to.”

“I know.” I looked toward the building. Marco was still gone. He’d looked like he was coming and then disappeared again after the manager called his name.

Enzo’s grip eased. He didn’t smile. He turned and started up the path. I followed. Olivia called my name once. I waved but didn’t turn around.

His car was at the far end, windows up. He opened the passenger door.

“Get in.”

I got in. He walked around, slid behind the wheel, and did not start the engine yet as he turned to face me. He looked partly relieved that I’d come with him.

“I was on the coast,” he said. “Saw the articles. That’s how I knew you were here.”

“Articles?”

He pulled his phone from his pocket and turned the screen toward me.

I froze.

Marco and Caterina. Many pictures of them at the beach from earlier. Even the one with her hand on his chest.

I inwardly groaned. This was not good, I knew how bad it would look to my brother and every single family

The captions were worse. ‘Sources close to the family say Caterina was Vescari’s only serious relationship. The reason he never married. Friends claim he never got over her. Seems like she is back to finally claim her rightful place as his bride.’

I froze.

No mention of me.

“They’re saying she was the one that got away,” Enzo repeated what I was currently reading. “And he’s letting them. While you’re standing there watching everything unfold. How can you be convinced that this is the right man for you when he is still hung over his ex? It is obvious that he is using you to humiliate our family. He doesn’t actually like you Loretta. This was his plan all along. Look at what he’s doing.”

“He’s not using me to humiliate anyone,” I said.”You don’t know what you’re looking at. I was there. You can’t look at a few pictures and assume you know everything.”
