Chapter 298
Chapter 298
~MARCO~
I had to deal with yet another emergency before getting the chance to talk to Loretta.
The second the last of the security detail cleared the side path, I turned and headed for the chairs.
She had been standing there when I left. She had been waiting.
But now, she wasn’t there.
stopped short of the empty space where she should have been.
I turned a full circle.
Nothing. Something cold settled within.

I walked toward the women. Olivia saw me first. Her arms were already folded. Blair had a towel draped over her shoulders and an expression that looked like it had been sharpened on purpose.
Charlotte stood between them, and when she met my eyes there was none of the usual ease in her face.
“Where is she?”
Charlotte answered. “She left.”
The tone was cold. Obvious. Like the answer should have been clear to me the second I came around the
corner.
“Left where?”
“With her brother.” Charlotte’s voice stayed level and cold. “Enzo. He showed up while you were gone. She went with him. We tried to stop her. She didn’t want to be stopped.” A pause. “I don’t blame her. She just had to watch your ex-girlfriend put her hands on you in front of everyone. And then you took this long to come and find her.”
Enzo.
My body went still. He never stepped foot in our territory. Not without invitation. Not without consequence. He had come here on purpose. He had come for her.
“She left with him?” The words felt wrong. I said them again, quieter. “She left with him.”
“She knows what she saw,” Olivia said. Her gaze didn’t move off me. “And she was tired of waiting for an explanation from you. She didn’t even know Caterina was your ex until today. You never told her. So she stood there and watched that woman touch you like she still had a right to, and then she had to wait while you handled something else. I don’t blame her for leaving. Poor Loretta. She stood up against her entire family for you.”
They were good at it. The three of them. They didn’t raise their voices. They didn’t need to. Every sentence did exactly what it was meant to.
I should have been there. I should have walked away the second I saw Caterina’s hand on my chest. I should have explained before the awful picture even formed in Loretta’s head. Instead I had stayed. I had let the situation stretch. I had given her every reason to believe the worst of what she saw.
I was already moving.
The path back toward the front lot felt longer than it had an hour ago. My mind kept replaying the last time I had looked at her. She had been quiet. Watchful. I had assumed she would still be there when I finished. I had assumed I had time.
I checked the front lot twice. Then a third time. No Enzo. No Loretta. I walked between the rows and looked into every car I could see into. Empty seats. Tinted windows that showed me nothing useful. Staff near the entrance shook their heads when I asked. One of them said they had seen a car leave not long ago. He couldn’ t remember the plate. He hadn’t been watching cinecly

Was Enzo taking her back to their house? If he was, I would make a scene twice. She was my wife.
Luca found me at the top of the steps. He had his phone out. His face had gone rigid in a way I recognized.
“Before you tear the place apart,” he said, “look at this.”
He turned the screen toward me.
I stopped.
The photos were clear. Too clear. Caterina’s hand flat against my chest. My head angled down toward her. The angle made it look worse than it had been. Intimate. Familiar. The kind of frame that sold. Underneath, the caption was short and vicious.
Someone had been close enough to take those shots. Someone had known exactly when to lift the camera. Someone had sold them before I even finished talking to my wife.
“Who the fuck took these?”
My voice came out low. Luca didn’t answer right away. I took the phone from him and scrolled. Three frames. All from roughly the same angle. All within the same two minutes. The quality was professional. Not a guest’s phone. Not a tourist. A lens. A person who had been waiting for the moment.
“She saw these,” I said. “Or Enzo saw them and put them in front of her. Same result.”
