After three years of court appearances, Tiffany and I finally reached a settlement. I ended up losing more than 70% of what should’ve been mine. She walked away with our home, the few apartments I had to my name, the luxury cars still had and she also got back all her shares. They had already lost so much value in three years that it wasn’t reason enough for herto celebrate, but she did anyway because overall, she got what she wanted and that was to make me the loser.

I regretted the day I proposed to her and asked her to be my wife. Things would’ve turned out so differently had I not taken that step.

Social media was still buzzing about the divorce for a whole week, but I had no time to linger on that matter anymore. It was a new day and I was ready to move on.

I moved to a small apartment in a middle class neighborhood. It was going to take some time to adjust, but I believed I could do it. The last thing I wanted was to go to my parents so they’d let me stay with them.

I stood in front of the mirror as I put on my suit quickly. I didn’t want to be late for my presentation. It had taken a lot for me to even get a chance at pitching my idea to the company.

Once I was fully dressed, I rushed to the kitchen, had a cup of coffee and dropped it in the sink among the pile of other dirty dishes. I was going to clean up once I was back. But that was what I had been saying for days yet couldn’t get myself to do it. My one focus had been landing that opportunity and I finally had it.

I stepped out of the apartment and stopped in my tracks for a few seconds when I looked at the car that I had left. It was one of the most common cars among the middle class and I had rarely used it for years.

It was only a week ago that I still moved around in my luxury cars and then they were gone. Tiffany had taken them all.

There was no time to stress over what I couldn’t change, so I headed towards the car and held my head high because it was going to be a great day.

On my way to the building, there were several billboards along the way with Maddox’s face on them. He was more popular and successful than ever.

It even felt humiliating looking up at those billboards because he looked like he was looking down on me.

I was lucky that there wasn’t much traffic that day because I managed to get to the building right on time. I even had ten minutes alone to make sure I set up everything with the projector provided in that boardroom.

I checked out my work one last time and believed once I was done with that presentation, I was going to score myself a huge

investor.

While sitting in my chair, the door creaked open and Ashley walked in. She was the assistant I had been in contact with through emails for that presentation.

“Good morning, Mr. Ford.”

“Good morning.” I gave a polite smile.

She walked all the way to the other side and took a seat near the head of the table. “The new CEO will be in any second now, so I hope you’re ready.”

I nodded firmly. “I’m definitely ready.”

Just a minute later, a figure walking into the room from the door caught my attention through my peripheral vision and when I looked over, my stomach twisted. It was Harper. She was in a perfectly tailored suit, luscious hair pulled back into a

ponytail and high heels that made her look like she was on the runway. Even in that suit, her beauty was undeniable.

She had rarely spoken to me in those three years. The two times we had met were in public and even then, she was very dismissive of my presence just so she could get away.

She took her seat right at the head of the table. Her aura was so different that she was intimidating.

I was at a loss for words and just blankly stared for a few seconds.

“Good morning, Mr Ford,” she finally said, her tone so professional that she left no room for me to be friendly with heron the personal level I was used to for years.

“Good-good morning to you.” I cleared my throat and looked away for a second.

After all this time, she was finally right in front of me and giving me her attention, but it wasn’t in the way I had desired for

years.

“Please begin.”

Her orders were straight to the point and I knew that I had to work twice as hard to impress her.

I still needed that opportunity more than anything, so I put aside all the emotions running through me, cleared my throat one more time so my voice would sound firm, then began the presentation.

Just as I had practiced, I went word for word, but she barely even moved her head in agreement or disagreement with what I was pitching to her. That made it difficult to tell if she was impressed or not. She just took a few notes.

I could feel my confidence in getting her approval fade as the minutes went by.

By the time I got to the end of my presentation, it just felt like I was fucked.

“Thank you for your time,” I said, then stood there and waited with my hands clasped together.

She just sat still for about 10 seconds and those were the longest 10 seconds of my life. What the fuck was she thinking? The silence was killing me.

Finally, she sighed and whispered something to Ashley, then looked back at me.

“Mr Ford, thank you for taking time today and pitching your idea to us. However, I have several concerns.”

I swallowed hard because I came to the conclusion that she was about to destroy me. And the very next second, she went in for it, picking apart every single word I had said like it didn’t belong in that presentation. It was also a negative look given what had happened to Fordchem. My pitch didn’t seem to impress her at all.

I was so defeated that I wasn’t even able to force a smile. It was even difficult to hold my head high.

Suddenly, she said, “However, with a few changes, I believe this could work. You have two weeks to get back to me and only then will I make my final decision.”

I was so surprised that my eyes went wide. She didn’t dismiss me completely and that was more than enough.

I thought that after the way I had broken her heart several times and made her grow distant, she would want to make my life miserable. But at that moment, she proved me wrong.

Thrilled, I lightly clapped once and smiled brightly. “Thank you so much. I’ll definitely work on it and get back to you.”

“And I’ll be waiting to hear back from you.” She flashed me a small smile, but kept it professional. “Alright then, I’ll see you in two weeks. Ashley, don’t forget that.”

Her assistant nodded while writing it down.

And with that, they both got up from their seats and Ashley waited, even though she was closer to the door because Harper needed to leave first.

“Before you leave, can I please have a word with you?”

Harper and Ashley glanced at each other.

“Do you mean me or Ashley?”

I fought the urge to scoff because of the professional setup we were in. It was obvious I was talking about her.

Still, I had to swallow whatever disrespect I had just felt. “You, please.”

She nodded and glanced at Ashley. “Please make sure my private jet is ready.”

Ashley nodded and was already on her way out.

I waited until she closed the door, then turned to Harper.

“Are we still in work mode or…?” I asked carefully.

Her expression softened up a little as she took a seat. “Not at all.”

That made me feel a little at ease and I sat across from her. “That’s a relief because I don’t think I was going to last another second in here with you looking at me like that.”

I was confident that what I had said would be so funny that she’d laugh, but I only managed to get a chuckle out of her and I felt awkward.

She stared right into my eyes with a smile that just looked like she was trying to keep things polite. The boundaries were already set and I wished I could change that.

“I had no idea you were running this company now,” I admitted.

“I acquired it a few weeks ago and kept it private. The look on your face was satisfying when I walked in.”

She finally laughed and it made me loosen up.

“You were the last person I expected to see here, but it’s good to see you. The last time was eight months ago. Remember that time at the café when you were with Maddox?”

“Yup. There’s no way I can forget. Look at you, finally divorced.”

I nervously rubbed the back of my neck. “Yeah and here I am, picking up the pieces.”

“You’ll be fine.”

Even though those were words of encouragement, I still expected to hear more.
