Chapter 279
Chapter 279
Maddox
I sat comfortably in Harper’s chair as I waited for her. It took her a few minutes to get to me and I was already getting impatient because I didn’t have much time before I would have to leave,
When she finally came in, dressed in that suit that made her look so dominant, I stroked my chin a few times, my eyes traveling up her figure as she made her way to me.
The contrast between her confident walk and warm smile made me stop staring at the rest of her. I wanted to take that c expression in as much as I could.
“I didn’t believe it for a second when Ashley told me you were here!” she said, walking fast enough thay she was just a few steps away from the desk.
I knew she was on her way to me but because I was so impatient, I leaned forward, grabbed her by the waist and pulled her down into my lap. She gasped loudly as she sat on me.
Her hands rested on the sides of my face as I trailed my breath along her neck.
“Stop” She gasped against my car.
That word came out clearly, but her hands said something else when they slipped to the back of my head. It was like she wanted me to keep going.
Just to tease her, I suddenly stopped breathing on her neck, pulled back and straightened up.
“I was starting to wonder how long it would take for you to get here,” I said casually. “Now I have about three minutes before I leave.”
She chuckled with disbelief while shaking her head. “Well played.”
I held onto her waist firmer than before. “You should see your face right now.”
She got off with crossed arms. “Oh yeah?”
“For someone who does this to me a lot, you definitely seem disappointed.”
Even though I wanted her so badly, it was satisfying to get back at her.
I got out of my seat and placed my fingers at the base of her chin for a quick kiss. She anticipated it so much that she didn’t
move away.
That was her office and the last thing I wanted was to keep that kiss going until it would turn steamy, so I pulled away and ) was quick to bury the images of the two of us in my mind.
“As I was waiting for you,” I said, “the newspaper came in and look/you’re on the front page again.”
I picked it up to show it to her but she groaned. “I don’t even have to look to know it’s another terrible picture of me.”
I chuckled. “It’s actually a good one.”
“I still don’t want to see it.”
“Scared it might’ve been a picture taken when you nearly forgot your speech yesterday at the gala?”
“Exactly.”

Chapter 279
“I have good news for you. It’s not.”
That finally got her attention and she took the newspaper from me.
“You’re right.” Her face lit up as she sighed with relief.
I stood behind her and placed my hands on her shoulders. “You shouldn’t even let it bother you at all because even if t had used one of those pictures, there would’ve been nothing to worry about. That’s because when you nearly forgot yo speech, you hid it well. No one could tell that you were panicking.”
“I guess after doing this for a while, you really get used to it.” She flipped through the pages until she landed on the pag with the details and more pictures from the gala. “There’s Tiffany in the background.”
She pointed at a certain spot on the picture and I took a closer look to confirm it was her.
Just because we both knew her so well was the only reason we could tell it was her. She had been given a seat in the corn far from the main stage. Her face in the picture was almost blurred out to focus on Harper.
“Last night, I saw her trying to talk to influential people at the gala and they kept excusing themselves,” she said.
“The same way you did when she tried to get your attention?”
She nodded proudly and looked back at me. “I had more important things to do than watch her suck up to me. She’s desperate. Jason’s mom mentioned to Aunt Rachel that Tiffany’s struggling to sell her shares. I mean, what did she expec They’ve lost so much value.”
I sighed. “That’s to be expected and people don’t want to be associated with her anymore. She has absolutely nothing to offer. Business is built on confidence. That’s what makes people invest.”
She smacked her lips like she needed to tell me something. “Yeah, about that…”
“What’s up?”
She put down the newspaper. “So…you know how I gave Grayson the chance to pitch his idea to me because it seemed like good investment?”
“Yeah?”
“We met just before I came back here.”
“I bet he almost shit his pants when he saw you walk in.”
She laughed amusingly. “Oh, yeah.”
“And how did it go?”
“It wasn’t that great. It needs some improvement and I made that very clear. He has one more chance in two weeks.”
“That’s fair enough. Just be sure to make the conditions clear, given what had happened to Fordchem.”
“Trust me, if I go through with this, and that’s a big IF…”
I nodded because I knew her pretty well when it came to business.
“One mistake from him and he’s out,” she said. “We had a little chat afterwards and I did something I should’ve asked you about first.”
“What’s that?”

Chapter 279
Her gaze dropped to my collar, like she wasn’t able to make eye contact with whatever she was about to say “I withocked him. It’s been so long that I don’t care anymore.”
I sighed. “You did the right thing.”
She quickly looked into my eyes again like she was so relieved that I wasn’t mad about it.
“He obviously knows his place right now,” I said as I placed my hands on her hips. “Besides, we have more important matters to worry about than someone like him, who’s starting from the bottom.”
She laughed lightly. “You’re right about that.”
“I better go now. Today’s the day of an important merger. Wanna celebrate with me over dinner?”
She ran her hand along the lapel of my jacket while biting her bottom lip. “I like the sound of that.”
I was just about to give her a goodbye kiss when I received a call from my uncle. It made me groan and look away from the
screen.
“Whoa! Since when did you do that upon receiving a call from him?” she asked with her head tilted.
I sighed. “It took me 15 minutes to get here and the entire time, he was just talking about the argument he had with his wife
She furrowed her eyebrows. “My sister didn’t mention anything.”
I scoffed. “She probably doesn’t want you to get involved.”
“I’m pretty sure that by the end of the day,” she smiled brightly, “everything will be great again. I’ve lost count of how many arguments they’ve had since they got married.”
As she went on and on about my uncle and her sister’s marriage while walking me to the elevator, I quietly stared at her, already imagining what her reaction was going to be like in the evening. I only hoped I wouldn’t mess it up.
I adjusted my watch while making my way to the parking lot, a little smile on my face, as I kept thinking about my plans for the evening with Harper.
There were so many ways I imagined she would react that I chuckled while raising my head, but paused when I saw Grayson right there in the parking lot.
He stood beside a modest car which was nothing that hinted at the life he once had.
He had one hand in his pocket while the other loosely held a set of car keys. He just stood there like he was deep in thought and stared at nothing.
I could’ve easily kept walking to my car and left, or approached him because he was right there and I hadn’t seen him in a while.
