It made me laugh awkwardly. “Why do you keep staring at me like that?”

“Like what?”

“Like…” I looked away, suddenly feeling shy. “Like I’m the only person in the world.”

“You are,” he said proudly.

I looked back at him while trying so hard to stop smiling. “Stop.”

“Have I ever told you how beautiful you are when you smile?”

I looked down at my plate, completely defeated.

Then, he placed his hand on the table to reach for mine and gently rubbed his thumb over the back of my hand.

From there, he kept the compliments coming and I didn’t know how much more I could take.

He finally gave it a rest, but the look in his eyes never changed, even when we finished dessert.

Just after the waiters cleared the table, he reached into his pocket. “I almost forgot.”

He placed a small black box in front of me and my eyes widened with pleasant surprise.

“You got me another gift?”

“I couldn’t help myself.”

I quickly opened the box and inside was a diamond necklace.

“It’s beautiful,” I said quietly.

“Well, yes, but not as beautiful as you.”

“Oh my gosh, stop.” I giggled.

I took it out of the box and held it up to the light. I was unable to stop admiring it.

“It suits you,” he said.

“Hey, you haven’t even seen me wearing it.”

“What are we waiting for?”

He immediately stood up and walked around the table to get to me.

I handed him the necklace before standing up, then turned my back toward him. My hair was already out of the way because I was so eager to try it on. It was such a different design from all the other ones in my collection.

While still holding my hair to one side, a few seconds passed, but nothing happened and I frowned.

“Babe? Are you struggling back there? You haven’t even attempted to put it around my neck.” I laughed as started turning around. “It’s not that difficult. You just have to…”

The rest of my sentence disappeared when I fully turned around. He was no longer standing, but down on one knee with a black ring box. There was a beautiful diamond ring staring right at me and that moment made me hold my breath.

I covered my mouth and was certain I was seconds away from dropping tears of joy.

My reaction made him smile just before he spoke while looking at my face.

“Babe, I’ve spent a long time trying to figure out how to put everything I feel into words,” he began, “but every time I tried, never felt like it was enough. You’ve challenged me, made me feel loved and made me grow in ways I never imagined. The truth is, I can’t imagine a future that doesn’t have you in it. Harper, I want to spend the rest of my life loving you.” He paused, just to take one breath. “Will you marry me?”

I let out a shaky breath after he asked me that question and tears finally ran down my cheeks.

“Yes!” I laughed through the tears. “Of course I’ll marry you.”

His entire face lit up and he quickly slipped the ring onto my finger while maintaining eye contact.

The moment the ring was in place, he quickly stood up and cupped my face for a passionate kiss.

I rested my forehead against his when we pulled away, whispering my next words to him while touching the side of his face.

“I love you.”

His expression softened in a way I had never seen before. “I love you too.”

Suddenly, I jumped in surprise at the sound of applause.

“What-”

I turned my head towards the entrance and my jaw dropped because standing there were all the people in my life who mattered the most.

Anna was the first to come closer and gently wrapped an arm around me before I could even recover from the shock.

“I’m glad you finally did it because it was getting hard to keep it a secret,” she admitted to Maddox.

I gasped. “You knew?”

“We all did,” my father said from the small crowd of familiar faces.

The next person to embrace Maddox and I was his father, then Aunt Patricia and my cousins.

Then, it was my father and he smiled proudly before giving me one of his warm hugs.
