I had told myself I wouldn’t come to the wedding for a whole month since I’d received the invitation. I tried to find ever excuse possible within myself, from pride to dignity. In the end, I had none of those things left.

Everyone was already in their seats and there were so many familiar faces but no one paid much attention to me. I still found it hard to believe at times that once upon a time, I couldn’t walk into a room without people rushing over to shale hand and introduce themselves.

Maddox was already at the altar, dressed in a black and white suit that made him look as wealthy as he was.

It was taking Harper quite a long time to walk down the aisle and a huge part of me hoped it was because she had change

her mind.

Right in the front, the Beaureagards occupied nearly an entire column while the Aldridges sat in the adjacent one and we just as many. Both sides had so much power in the corporate world that I didn’t even feel worthy of walking up to any of those people despite being part of the Aldridges at one time.

Apart from the two billionaire families, some of the biggest names in business were also scattered through the chapel and few were people I had met recently when my business ideas were turned down.

Harper was the only one to give me a second chance and I blew it. I should’ve been better prepared on that day, but seeing that engagement ring on her finger only added to my lack of confidence when I’d made my second presentation.

Even though that happened, I was still invited to the wedding and there I was, sitting all the way in the back. I could hear th camera crew behind me talking while waiting for the moment she would finally arrive.

That wasn’t just any wedding. It was the grandest wedding I had ever seen. The wedding I once had with Tiffany was nothin compared to that.

I received a call from Juliet just then, but declined immediately because I knew what it was she wanted. She had been bugging me for some money along with Claire because they both blamed me for how Maddox had ruined their lives years ago. I didn’t have shit to give anybody because I was barely holding on as well to what I had left.

Just as I set my phone to airplane mode, the music changed and every conversation in the chapel faded out quickly.

Everyone stood up just as the large doors at the end of the aisle slowly opened.

When I saw Harper, I forgot how to breathe for a few seconds. The first thing I noticed wasn’t the sleeveless ball gown dress or the 5 billion dollar diamond necklace Maddox had gotten for her during the bid years ago.

The first thing I noticed was that she looked happy. Her smile reached her eyes and the worst of it all was that it wasn’t even the smile she used to have whenever she hoped I’d finally notice her.

She had already found everything she had ever wanted and it wasn’t with me.

Mr Beauregard was right beside her and offered her his arm.

As they slowly walked in and she walked right past me without even glancing at me, my stomach twisted in a way I had never felt before. Was that how she had felt on my wedding day?

I remembered the version of her who was so desperate for my attention that the little that I gave her mattered to her more than anything else. What a fool I had been because it was my actions that led to that moment and now, she only had eyes for Maddox.

Something else cracked inside of me just then and I looked away. I couldn’t watch them look at each other like that, when I wished that it could’ve been the two of us instead.

I was so selfish back then as I thought I could always have better and beauty and power were all that mattered. For th longest time, I believed she’d never stop loving me and that was my biggest mistake.

With everyone facing forward, I forced myself to look again and it was right when her father kissed her forehead bef placing her hand into Maddox’s.

Maddox held her hand carefully like she was the most precious thing in the world, not something to possess, but som to protect.

Right when their wedding vows began, reality hit harder than ever before and I struggled to breathe. It was actually happening right in front of me.
