Chapter 86 No One Else but Herself

She changed the subject, steadying her breath, refusing to let her sobs return.

Hearing her voice grow calmer, Xenon said softly, “Talk to me again when you’re somewhere safe.”

Elina let out a light sigh. “Why do you care so much?”

“What else should I do? Laugh at you? Watch from a distance while you struggle? Or maybe judge you like everyone else?”

There was a subtle tension in Xenon’s voice, a worry so quiet it could almost be missed-but not by her.

Elina fell silent for a moment.

Those were the very things that had already happened to her.

They hadn’t just watched from the sidelines-they had kicked her while she was down.

Even Fraser, once her dependable big brother, was no longer the person he used to be.

A faint, dry laugh slipped from her lips, tinged with sadness. “Xenon, thank you. You’ve really helped me more than you know.”

“Why say that now?” he replied. “I didn’t help you because of what you’ve done. Don’t overthink it. I helped because I wanted to.”

His breath grew heavier, like there were still things left unsaid.

Elina wiped away her tears. This time, her smile came naturally-no force, no sadness.

“Yes, yes, I know. You are simply following your own feelings, doing whatever keeps your heart at ease. Nothing more.”

“Feeling a little better now?” he asked, relieved. “Go eat something. I’ll cover it. My treat.”

“I’m not so down-and-out that I need you to buy me food,” she said with a smirk. “Come on, let’s get to the point.”

She’d misunderstood him, but Xenon didn’t explain. He just let out a long breath.

“There’s a patient from Murica arriving soon. She’ll be staying in Riverville for treatment.”

“Your patient?” Elina asked curiously. “You referred her back here?”

“No. My mentor did.”

Elina frowned. “Why refer her to China? Isn’t overseas treatment usually better?”

“Not always. Riverville General is internationally respected. Its technology and equipment are praised even by top hospitals in developed countries.

“My guess? Her family’s worried she won’t make it abroad. They’d rather bring her home. Better to take a chance here than die far from home.”

Xenon’s voice was calm, like he was talking about the weather.

Elina sucked in a breath. “I didn’t realize Riverville’s reputation was that good.”

“Credit goes to the hospital director and a few incredible doctors. You included, actually. My mentor always said you had serious potential. He thinks you’ll help take our medical field to the next level.”

“Stop flattering me,” Elina laughed, touched and slightly embarrassed.

“I’m not. And I’m not trying to flatter you either. Dr. Steven said it himself. You took his elective surgery class, didn’t you? He never forgot you. Still says it’s a shame you didn’t stay in Murica to specialize further.”

The mention of it brought back vivid memories from med school-days of long shifts, intense lectures, and fire-in-the-belly ambition.

Sensing her silence, Xenon added, “But that’s okay. If you ever want to come back, Steven and I will be here.”

Elina let out a soft laugh. “Okay.”

Then she asked, “So, what do you need me to do for the patient?”

“Plenty. Steven was her attending physician in Murica. He wants you to participate in her case discussions.”

Elina pressed her lips together. “Now I’m curious what condition she has that even Steven finds challenging.”

“You always light up when it’s about medicine,” Xenon teased gently. “Good luck. I hope you can help her recover.”

Even though she was alone in the car, Elina nodded firmly. “I’ll try my best.”

After a few more exchanges, they hung up.
