Chapter 90 The Smile and the Scorn

Finished

“Do your best to offer as many treatment plans as possible. The more options we generate, the higher the chance of success.”

Thunderous applause broke out across the conference room. But even as the sound echoed around her, Elina found her curiosity deepening-just who was this patient?

Dr. Dennis’s rousing closing speech had clearly stirred everyone’s motivation. The seminar officially concluded.

Elina gathered her notes and walked out with the director, lingering at the back of the departing crowd.

Walking with them were Dr. Wayne and Dr. Terrance, who hadn’t been present earlier in the day. Dr. Dennis stopped and took a moment to introduce Elina to them.

“I’ve heard of Dr. Ford before. Seeing you today, I must say-you live up to your reputation. If you were one of my students, I’d be hiding you away like a treasure,” Dr. Wayne joked warmly.

Standing next to him was a woman in her thirties, dressed modestly and simply. She appeared to be his student.

Dr. Terrance offered Elina a few kind words too. “You’re at least ten years younger than Layne, carry his and already this capable. I really envy Dennis. Looks like he’s found someone who’ll research forward.”

But not everyone shared the same enthusiasm.

Behind Dr. Terrance stood a man with a tight jaw and a face like stone. Clearly, he didn’t agree with his mentor’s praise.

The remarks were obviously meant in jest, but Layne gave no one the courtesy of a smile. His lack of grace stood out starkly even as the senior doctors chatted away, oblivious.

Elina lifted her eyes just in time to meet Layne’s cold, appraising gaze.

She pressed her lips together, then gently curved them into a smile-offering a polite gesture of goodwill.

Layne paused, then gave a curt nod in return.

“We’re all young professionals,” someone said with a chuckle. “No need for formalities. I’m sure you’ll all get along quickly.”

The three professors led the way ahead, and their students followed a few steps behind.

The woman from earlier introduced herself. “I’m May. Thirty-two. I’ve heard so much about you, Lina. We just never had the chance to meet-until now.”

“You’re amazing. If there’s ever a chance, please teach me.”

Elina smiled. “Of course. If there’s anything I can share, I’ll be glad to. But you’ll have to teach

me too.”

Despite being the youngest in the group, she didn’t show a hint of arrogance, nor did she shrink herself with unnecessary humility. She carried herself with grace, confidence, and sincerity.

May found herself liking Elina instantly.

But Layne, walking silently to Elina’s right, clearly did not share that sentiment. Every time Elina and May chatted, she could faintly hear him scoff under his breath.

On the surface, Layne was polite enough. But Elina had already picked up on the disdain in his eyes, the veiled contempt in every small gesture.

May, sensing the awkward energy, tried to ease the tension. “Layne, don’t go stealing Lina away from me, all right?”

“Don’t

worry. I won’t.” Layne replied flatly, barely hiding his derision.

May smiled awkwardly. The two clearly knew each other already. Layne gave her just enough face to avoid conflict-but not enough to conceal his disapproval.

Elina said nothing.

It wasn’t that she couldn’t stand up to Layne. She just didn’t want to make trouble for Dr. Dennis or cause friction among colleagues-especially not in front of respected mentors.

She’d grown up knowing that standing out attracted resentment. People didn’t always need a reason to dislike her-her competence was often reason enough.

This wasn’t the first time she’d been looked at like this, and it wouldn’t be the last.

What Elina didn’t know, however, was that the calmer and more composed she appeared, the more Layne convinced himself that she didn’t deserve any of it.

That she had no real skill-just luck and connections.

When they reached the hospital’s entrance, Layne suddenly leaned in and muttered near her ear, “If I were you, I’d have left the seminar by now. Wouldn’t want to embarrass myself once the truth comes out.”
