Chapter 87 Thunder in Riverville

The next day, Riverville was drenched in its first torrential spring downpour.

Elina drove to the hospital. She hadn’t even stepped into her consulting room when her phone rang-it was the director calling.

By the time she reached his office and opened the door, she saw a modestly sized room already filled with five or six older men.

They turned to look at her, their eyes unmistakably appraising.

The director stood up and welcomed her in. “Lina, come in.”

She stepped forward and greeted everyone politely.

A few of the faces were familiar from medical journals, even though she had never met them in person. Others were introduced directly by the director.

“This must be Dr. Ford. A student of Dr. Dennis-no wonder she’s so capable and impressive at such a young age.”

After that first compliment, the others chimed in, each trying not to be outdone.

Elina accepted their praise with grace, returning each with proper courtesy.

It wasn’t until ten minutes later that they finally got to the real reason she had been called.

Dr. Dennis turned to her. “For now, I’d like you to reduce your clinic hours. We need you to take part in a critical and complex case discussion.”

Elina had already been briefed by Xenon the night before, so her expression didn’t shift.

“The patient is suffering from overlapping episodes of invasive hemangioma and multiple sclerosis. Symptoms began three years ago, and she’s been receiving treatment in Murica ever since.”

Dr. Dennis outlined the case while Elina listened carefully.

“Remarkable,” one of the elders remarked, noticing how calm she remained. “When I first heard about this case, I was genuinely shocked.”

Elina looked up and answered calmly, “Apologies, I was just paying close attention. It’s true- this condition is extremely rare and complex.”

Despite her words, her composed expression remained unchanged.

“I almost thought you’d already done specialized research on it,” someone said, tone half- skeptical. “When I was your age, I was just focused on staying humble and learning. Opportunities like this were gold.”

That came from Dr. Hawthorn, who also held a position at the provincial disease research

center.

Elina glanced at him and immediately caught the condescension in both his tone and expression.

Yet she didn’t react with irritation. Instead, she smiled softly.

“I’m very grateful for this opportunity, Dr. Hawthorn. I’ll make the most of it and do my best to learn at the seminar.”

Her humility left Dr. Hawthorn momentarily speechless.

Dr. Dennis stepped in again. “Lina, go take care of your other work. The seminar is scheduled this afternoon in the hospital conference room. Don’t be late.”

He wasn’t about to let anyone push his student around.

Elina stood, gave her farewells to everyone, and stepped out of the office.

As soon as she was alone, she let out a long breath.

Any job involving seniority and hierarchy would inevitably come with a bit of formality and performance.

If not for Dr. Dennis, she wouldn’t have tolerated that meeting for as long as she had.

Thankfully, he’d noticed her discomfort and let her leave first.

Back in her consulting room, Elina quickly followed up with patients-three in-person visits, plus adjustments to surgery schedules and treatment plans for those currently admitted.

Only after lunch did she finally get a moment to review the seminar case files the director had sent her.

Her phone buzzed.

Busy annotating the medical notes, she didn’t even glance at the screen and answered directly.

“Don’t forget your training session,” came Jack’s icy voice. “It’s 2:10. You’re not at the company yet.”
