Chapter 89 A Room Full of Doubt

It was clear that this case wasn’t just medically rare-it had shaken Riverville’s entire medical community. Judging by the scale and the guests present, the patient herself had to be someone significant.

Elina walked in beside Dr. Dennis and took a seat just behind him-essentially in the assistant’s position.

The seminar wouldn’t delve too deeply at the start. It opened with brief introductions from the twenty or so attendees, followed by a broad overview of the case study and treatment objectives.

“Next, we’ll go over the patient’s symptoms, the stages of treatment she’s received in Murica, and how that data can guide our upcoming efforts…”

Elina listened with sharp focus.

As Dr. Dennis began his presentation, Elina immediately understood why Steven had specifically recommended her for the seminar.

Back when she was studying in Murica, she’d taken elective courses that involved both of the diseases now affecting the patient. She had even conducted targeted research projects on each of them.

Her curiosity had always pushed her further, and she’d dug deep into both diseases-each difficult enough to manage on its own.

But combined, they became exponentially harder to treat.

No clinical treatment currently existed to directly address either rare disease, let alone the two acting in tandem. Even surgery could only slow the inevitable decline, and repeated procedures offered only temporary relief.

Worse, if treatments for both were used simultaneously without extreme caution, their drug interactions might prove toxic.

At best, the patient would see no progress. At worst, complications could cause irreparable damage.

Cases like this-one in ten thousand-had virtually no precedent. The chance of a cure? Next to

zero.

No wonder this seminar was such a major event. A successful treatment here wouldn’t just save a life-it would push human medicine forward by an enormous leap.

Elina occasionally jotted down notes, but for the most part she sat with her chin propped on one hand, eyes fixed on the projection as the slides changed.

Ironically, the paper she had written in Murica-on the compounded pathology of these two diseases-had been cited during the session. Dr. Dennis was even using it to guide the group through certain treatment strategies.

“The patient contacted me personally to request that Dr. Elina Ford be added to the panel,” Dr. Dennis said, “Her primary physician in Murica, Dr. Steven, strongly recommended Elina due to her previous work in this area. Even though her research time was short, her conclusions were detailed and valuable in a field with virtually no precedent. If anyone has questions or insights to offer, please collaborate with Lina.”

A quiet murmur swept through the room.

“Impressive-Dr. Dennis really knows how to nurture talent,” someone said with genuine admiration.

Elina smiled modestly. Dr. Dennis waved a hand. “Back then, Lina was still in Murica. I hadn’t taught her yet. This is her own achievement.”

“Really? She was what, twenty when she studied abroad? That young and already publishing at this level? Who knows how much of that she actually wrote…”

“Exactly. She seems more about appearances than substance. I wouldn’t be surprised if the patient recommendation was just a front.”

The praise and skepticism came in equal measure-only the whispers of doubt were much softer.

But when enough people muttered, a few lines still slipped into Elina’s ears.

Dr. Dennis heard them too. His face darkened.

“I hope we can stay focused on the medical case and avoid baseless attacks on Dr. Ford,” he said firmly.

The weight of authority in his voice quickly silenced the murmurs.

Then Dr. Wayne spoke up, taking the lead. “If Dr. Steven recommended her, I’m confident in her abilities. Dr. Ford, I hope you’ll participate fully and help us tackle this challenge together.”

Harmony Hospital’s Dr. Terrance added, “Young professionals today work hard and have excellent resources. It’s no surprise they sometimes outpace us. Let’s not be petty about it.”

With their support, the doubters fell silent.
