The unexpected words instantly froze the air inside the car.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Fraser frowned. “I came to see you the moment I got You know how important you are to me-you’ve always been my little sister. Don’t you care that saying something like this could hurt me?”
back.
Hearing that, Elina couldn’t help but feel a flicker of guilt.
She was, in truth, venting her frustration at Fraser.
She couldn’t believe that everyone who saw Elowyn seemed to fall under her spell.
Jack, of course. Their mother, even more so. And if Fraser was no different, then Elina didn’t mind cutting the ties between them.
But Fraser’s words pulled up memories-fragments of childhood, warmth, loyalty. She wavered.
She opened her mouth, ready to explain.
But Fraser cut her off before she could speak. “Elowyn would never treat people like this. You keep saying how awful she is, but what I see now is you pushing away the people who try to help you. You’re the one who doesn’t appreciate anything.”
He let the accusation hang in the air, as if it were some kind of personal victory.
But beside him, Elina fell silent again.
Her hands tightened around the steering wheel. Her brows furrowed, and even her driving became unstable.
“Slow down! There’s a speed limit here,” Fraser warned as he felt the car suddenly accelerate.
Elina snapped out of it and slammed the brakes-almost too hard.
The car lurched. Fraser stared at her, confused.
“Lina, what’s going on with you?”
Elina pulled over and let out a deep breath. “Fraser, I’m not feeling well. I shouldn’t be driving. You take the wheel.”
Her face had gone pale. She didn’t even glance at him as she spoke.

Fraser thought she was faking it-looking for an excuse to push him away. His expression turned cold.
“Unbelievable. I put you ahead of Elowyn. I believed everything you told me. And this is how you treat me?”
He unbuckled his seatbelt with a bitter laugh.
“I don’t know what exactly happened between you and the Ford family over the years, but clearly, you’re the one who’s changed. Everyone else is the same-only you’ve become strange, secretive, impossible to read.”
“I don’t need you to take me home. I’ll find my own way.”
And with that, Fraser got out and slammed the door shut behind him.
Elina sat frozen, watching him walk away until he disappeared down the street. Then she bent forward and pressed a hand to her aching chest.
She had endured so many betrayals, so much belittlement over the years. And words today still managed to leave her crushed and breathless.
yet Fraser’s
Was there no one left in the world who could see the truth? Who might feel even a shred of sympathy for her?
Her brows pinched tighter, the pain in her chest sharpening.
Her vision blurred. Tears burned in her eyes, her nose tingling with heat.
Bzzzz-
Suddenly, her phone buzzed in the back seat.
She drew in a shaky breath, fumbled for the center console, and dry-swallowed a few pills before slowly reaching for her phone.
“Yes?” came a calm, low voice on the other end. “Why did it take so long to pick up? Were you busy?”
Elina didn’t dare speak at first, afraid he’d hear her trembling,
She took a few ragged breaths and forced out a faint smile. “No, I’m fine. I was just driving. It wasn’t a good time to answer.”
“What made you call me this late? Isn’t it the middle of the night where you are?”
Xenon was silent for a moment before asking instead, “Are you feeling unwell?”
